We are doing a 23.98 project for the first time and we are having trouble getting our monitor to display at 23.98 through analog component. We have a multiformat Sony HD monitor. All settings in FCP are 1080P 23.98psf. The Kona 3 is set to 1080psf23.98. As soon as we switch our video playback in FCP to 1080i 29.97, it works (kona adding pulldown). Can you monitor even 23.98 through component? We are getting a picture through HDSDI on another monitor at the same time. What are we doing wrong here?

Perahps that monitor does not accept psf 23.98. What model is it?

It’s a Sony PVM 20L5. My colleague assures me that it will handle 23.98.
The same model will play out at 23.98 from our Avid suites.

The 20L5 has to be a 20L5/1 the /1 was an update signifying 23.98 psf in 1080 and it displays is as 48i (and will subsequently give you a headache if you watch it too much). If I am workinf 1080 23.98 psf I always have the Kona add pulldown so that I don’t go blind or have my head explode.

So, in your Avid suite, if you are truly outputting 1080psf23.98, the monitor will say 1080 48i. If you can’t get that to work with your Kona card, you have something setup improperly. Your output needs to be set to 1080 psf 23.98 and not 1080p23.98 with the corresponding bit depth (8,10 or RGB) in the video playback section of the view menu.

    OK…that makes sense.
We will have to check our avid monitor to see if it is the /1 version.
    Thanks

Having gone through this in the past, I had to contact Sony to find out for sure whether I had a /1 or not. You can call them and have them check the serial number of the monitor to be sure. Not all /1 monitors were labeled as such, is what they told me.

We’re having a similar issue. I was able to confirm that the monitors we have are the /1.

We have four of the PVM-20L5/1 monitors yet only two of them correctly display the 1080psf23.98 signal. The other two display an image that looks like this https://i.imgur.com/zoJTr.jpg

I can hook two of the monitors up to the same source (Final Cut>AJA Kona 3>Monitor by component) and have one display the signal correctly and one look wavy. Does anyone know why this might be? Is it a monitor setting?

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Any chance you have 29.97 genlock going to those two statons?
