I heard the same thing: “I think you’ll be very happy this fall.” This coming from a friend in the know. I think it’s going to be big.

I have a feeling we’ll see another feature-rich update when Yosemite launches. Including, I hope, some UI redesign to match the flatter look of OS X.

  • It was a precursor alright!

It does help with Final Cut X. I use both a 23-inch Cinema Display and a 27-inch LED Cinema Display, and it felt like the 5870 was really lagging having to drive both displays and handle rendering, complex timelines, and the like.

With the 7950, everything feels much much smoother; with both displays running, rendering/exporting times have greatly improved, and there’s a lot less (mostly zero) lag when dealing with large/complex timelines. I recently cut a music video shot with the RED Scarlett camera, and edited using the RAW 4K media and the whole process was smooth as silk. I’m sure having 42GB of RAM helped a great deal, but that’s my experience.

i put a Sapphire 7950 in my 2010 8-core Mac Pro (upgrading from a 5870), and have noticed a huge boost in performance, especially in Mavericks.

    this argument is nonsense.

  • why’s everyone suggesting a 2008 Mac Pro? if you don’t want to splurge on a new one, then look for a damn 2010/2012 model. you’re gonna need to spend some cash if you want X to run like a champ, and after whatever tower you buy, you should upgrade the graphics card and most likely upgrade the RAM. don’t skimp. and don’t be so foolish to spend $700 on a 2008 Mac Pro. it’s not a bargain in 2014.

I’m not sure the source, as I didn’t shoot it. But what’s so weird is that the footage plays totally fine outside of FCPX. In FCPX it has to be transcoded to ProRes or rendered in order to play without dropping frames.

i’m not arguing with your rant about the software. that is all.

Keyframing in X is probably my biggest gripe with the software. Needlessly convoluted and laggy.

Though, I’ve been editing for ten years, I use a bunch of NLEs and prefer to use X, and I’m making a very nice living with it on some very well known brands. So, can we simmer down a bit and not denigrate people as amateurs because they do find it effective? Many of us would appreciate that. We are all adults after all.
