Are there any curves? Since there’s no anti-aliasing in a DVD subpicture layer, these won’t look smooth.

Photoshop isn’t the ideal environment to judge your button highlights, unless you understand how they work on DVD-Video.
Subpictures are 2 bit graphics. That means one color, and one opacity value. No gradients, drop shadows, or other ‘soft’ effects will come through correctly. No anti-aliasing, just one color value, and one opacity value.

Sounds like a field dominance issue. Was your footage exported lower or upper dominant? Whichever it is, match the transcoding preset field dominance in Encore.

It’s not possible to have video as a subpicture in DVD-Video. Subpictures are 2-bit graphic overlays.
What you can do is create a separate menu for each button with video, then use auto-activate on the button to switch to the next menu. This won’t work in a software DVD player being driven by a mouse unless the user clicks the button, but it should work on a set top player. Also, due to the nature of the work required, this will turn into a lot of work if you have more than a few buttons.

What QT codec are you using? Is the MOV a reference file, or self-contained? Finally, which version of Encore?

You don’t need chapter end actions to play the next chapter…that’s what’s causing the hesitation. Clear the chapter end actions and you’ll be fine.
If you want to also allow the user to watch a chapter then return to the last menu, then create a chapter playlist for each chapter whose end action is ‘Return to Last Menu’.

No, there is no way to do this without creating a new project.

In Encore, highlight layers are those with a (=1) layer name prefix. [also (=2) and (=3)]
You can make a layer into a highlight layer at any time by copying or cutting it, then selecting a button and choose Edit > Paste as Subpicture.

You’ll have to be the judge of how good or bad it is.
Best to not start with Xvid compressed video for your assets. If you could get uncompressed video, that will yield the best quality. DV codec will give good quality. (just don’t convert the Xvid to another format, as you’ll loose quality again).
