Part of the problem may be in the rescaling of the image. Your original is 960×720 and the output is 720×480. It may be adding distortion.

In Premiere copy and paste your timeline into a new timeline that is 720×480. You may have to make some adjustments to your individual images and graphics.

Remember that MPEG compression for DVD is not by nature graphics friendly. You will see some degradation and artifacts.

Try Bitrate Settings
Bitrate Encoding: CBR (constant bit rate)
Bitrate (Mbps): 6

See if that helps.

Most of the time PNGs play well with FCP, but occasionally you get one that does not want to get along with the program. This usually shows up when there is a transition involved. The best solution I’ve found is to take the graphic into PhotoShop and make TIFF file with an alpha channel.

In the Dynamics filter, turn on/check the AutoGate. This will help drop the room tone down during pauses and in between sentences. This basically opens the volume up to your set level when someone is talking and then turns down the volume when they are not, opening and closing the volume gate as it is. This all happens in milliseconds, much faster and better than we can set audio levels to do the same.

Here are the general settings I use;

Threshold -38.60 db
Attack 1.35 ms
Release 86.74 ms
Hold 1.00 ms

Play with the Threshold to get the right amount gating for your clips.

Here are a couple of them.

shift+z zoom to fit in Program monitor (works in timeline)
Backslash key
(hit it once it will show entire timeline, hit it again it will return to your previous zoom setting)

q (switch focus between timeline and program monitor)
SHIFT + 3 for timeline
SHIFT + 4 for program

In Preferences/General, check the box for “Default scale to frame size”. Then when you drop the clips into the 4:3 timeline they will automatically scale to fit.

I’ve only had a couple of people out of about 70 that I had a little trouble with their hair when keying. It didn’t occur to me that it might be the intensity of the green. I’ll have to try some more tests. Thanks for the tip.

Double click on the clip to load it in the Viewer window.
Click on the Effect Controls tab.
Click on the triangle next to fx Motion.
There you will find controls to Scale (zoom) and Rotate.

If you need to reposition the the clip in your frame, click on the four-cornered box next to the word Motion. This will let you click and drag the clip around in the Program window.
