I have run in to that too. Some transitions don’t play well with adjustment layers or some effects in an adjustment layer don’t like a transition below them. I end up copying the filters and effects from the adjustment layer to the clips to get things to render/export properly.

Try cleaning out the cache, it can fill up easily with larger file processing.
Go to Media Encoder Preferences, Media section, Media Cache Database, select Clean.

You can’t alter the shape of the stock transitions. You can create custom gradient shapes to get close to the same effect. I created one in Photoshop. You can use it if you like or use it as a guide to make your own.

Apply the Gradient Wipe transition between your clips, it will open a dialog box to ask you the Gradient Wipe Settings, click on Select Image… and chose your custom gradient. Then key your anchor in a layer above and keyframe it to match the wipe.

I think QuickTime 7 was the last version to have that option. Sometimes you can find it to download or get a copy of an old disc somewhere.

I’ve had better results shooting the photos with a 10MP, or higher, camera. Use small magnets or a good piece of glass from a frame shop to flatten out the picture. Much faster than scanning. Just make sure you have even lighting on the photo.

Have the students sign up for Lynda.com for the semester and let Lynda’s technical training staff teach the NLE system you are using. This replaces one of the student’s text books for the class at about the same cost. They will learn how to use the NLE outside of class and you use the in class time to teach theory and ethics.

Shane had excellent suggestions for theory resources.

Burning the WMV files directly to the Blu-ray may not work. It depends on the make of the player and if it will play the WMV files. Most Blu-ray and DVD players will play back a .mov or .mp4 QuickTime files, but I’m not sure about the Microsoft formats.

Jeff mentioned encoding the files for and authoring a Blu-ray disc, which would be best if you have the time.

Use a laptop to play the WMV HD files into the monitor, they will look better than the DVD MPEG2 compression.

Check to see if “Use Maximum Render Quality” is checked, if it is turn it off.
