MC supports both 1080p23.976 and 1080p24.000 projects. They are two different framerates. In HD, 1080p24.000 projects play out as 1080/24P or 1080/24PsF (depends on your hardware options and settings). 1080p23.976 plays out as 1080/23.976p or 1080/23.976PsF (depends on your hardware options and settings).

In SD, MC supports 23.976p NTSC, 24.000p NTSC and 24.000p PAL projects. Both NTSC versions will output an 29.97i SD NTSC signal (by adding 3:2 pulldown). PAL projects play out a 25i PAL signal (with 12+1 fields PAL pulldown for 24p projects).

Timecode is just a counter. NTSC supports 30 and 30DF, PAL supports 25.

No, if you buy a perpetual license for 1299, that comes with 12 months of support and upgrades. You can keep that license up to date by paying 299 before the end of those 12 months. That 299 will give you another 12 months of support and upgrades.
If you do not pay the 299 before the end of the 12 months, you will not be able to upgrade that license anymore.

Also: it is EOL. Newscutter is now merely an option to Media Composer software. Not sure what the Newscutter option entails, and I think most Newscutter functionality has been moved into MC over the past few years.

Nice. I’m fairly sure that both MagnaMana FinalDCP and QubeMaster Xpress do a slowdown/speedup rather than interpolation when you offer them 23.976 or 25. But since most of my work is 24.000, I have not tested that.

When you QT export anyting other than QT Reference or QT Same As Source from MC, you are using the QT engine to transcode to whatever codec you choose there. And the QT H264 encoder sucks when it comes to handling gamma. Much better to use QT Ref or Same-As-Source and transcode in Squeeze (which you got for free with MC). That lets you use x264 or MainConcept H264, which have superior gamma handling.

Also note that your Avid works in legal Rec601/709 (16-235) and that computer monitors work in 0-255, so you may need to adjust for that at some point.

1) just drag the blue bar across the timeline. That does not activate trim mode. Although the Stupid Tool may kick in if you have it active – I wouldn’t know as I try to keep it off.

2) Splice In is inserting material from the source monitor into the timeline, either at a Mark or at the playhead (to the playhead UNLESS a Mark is present). Everything after that point will move to the right.
Add Edit makes a ‘cut’ where you are parked. Meaning that you can use it to split up a segment into two or more segments, then move them around. Add Edit does not add footage to the sequence.

3) You may want to find the ‘Extend’ button. You can mark an in or out at the point where you want to extend a shot to. You can then instantly do that without entering trim mode.

4) top/tail is a powerful tool that quickly lets you extract the top or tail of a shot in the TL.

Check the Video Output Tool, and see if the output is set to P or to PsF. Not all monitors accept PsF over HDMI.
