Looked into the image sequence at the specific frame and see its a corrupt frame.
Haven’t had one of those in a while.
Problem solved.

this is not an alpha error. You have to make sure that you set apart your layers in Z space. It looks like what you are doing is with 3D layers. Even offsetting the Z position by 0.5 or 1 will tell after effects which layer is actually in front of the other without changing your overall animation or look too much.

Alright that makes much much more sense. Thank you for clearing this up

Thanks Dan,
What is the significance of the double equal? What is it saying?
Just for future reference?

Might be raising a thread back from the Dead but I just had this problem. AE was saying failed at whatever time. When I looked at that specific frame there was actually nothing happening. Just background precomp with solids inside and thats it. The error was failing out one frame before another precomp kicked in with some pretty heavy effects. So my first conclusion was AE doesn’t always give you the exact frame error. I only thought this because maybe AE was pre calculating it.
Turns out I had RSMB in that precomp and RSMB applied to my root composition. RSMB + RSMB = fail.
It was hard for me to pinpoint the problem because prior to the time above I was rendering out 15fps so the time that it errors out isn’t the same as the actual frame causing the problem.
I hope this helps someone.

after getting another full lockup i decided to pull the samsung ram. Rendering on 8 gigs with mutiprocessing vs not i lost no real time on the render.
I did know that macs like kingston.
Also i didnt have any problems with the kingston only. Looks like its a 12 gig odd ram size issue.
I’ll have to go out and get another 8 gigs sometime later on.

actually i havent tried just the kingston sticks. I’ll give it a shot. But im thinking at 80$ for 8 gigs of ram for my computer it would just make sense to bump up to 16. I’ll try the kingston sticks alone when i have time.

basically you’re looking to give a gift to the people that hire you? I wouldn’t. The industry is based off of who you know, not what you know. Its a sad realization but its for the most part true.
Anyone that we look for for freelance are people that we know and they gladly take our work. I wouldn’t give them 20% off your services or anything. It just would be weird when they go to hire you the second time because that isn’t something that people typically do and they would probably ask questions when everything costs more.

Are you using multiprocessing? I only use multi processing when exporting, never when I’m designing. Give that a try maybe that will help.
As far as processors go, i can’t really help. But i can help with your macbook pro vs iMac dilemma.
I had a 2009 macbook pro then recently upgraded to a 27″ iMac with and i5 quad core at home. Juiced up with 12 gigs of ram (soon to be 16 or more) it handles most comps well. I would assume that if the macbook pros are running the same CPU’s or better then your macbook pro will be just as good if not better.
To compare it to something, i had a 2010 quad core mac pro with 16 gigs of ram at the office for a while, my iMac is may faster than that machine.

January 13, 2012 at 2:16 pm in reply to: Please tell me how to create this video overlay effect?to me, looks like a colour correct, stock film grain with some sort of blending mode on it, and little subtle things like lens flares and stuff added. I just saw the first 20 seconds of your video. Long dissolves and some film flicker will help.
