  • You, sir, are a lifesaver! I always forget to enable 3D in vector layer in precomps and then I tear my hair out 🙂 Thanks.

A nice way to backup FCPX stuff is to use disk images:

I personally use Carbon Copy Cloner to do just that automatically every night. Might save my bacon if there was a major disaster and Projects or Events got corrupted. You can exclude files that can gen re-generated automatically (Render, Analysis…) to have smaller backup sets.

Yeah, but – every other NLE has no issue whatsoever to play a single stream of, say, 720/25p ProRes from a measly USB2 drive. And simple cuts editing is fast.

FCPX has BIG issues working with larger projects, even from eSATA G-Tech RAID 0 with speeds over 130 MBps on a 8-core Mac Pro. Opening a keyword (bin) almost always slowly re-reads thumbnails, with RAID thrashing. When I switch to another bin and back, it SLOWLY rereads thumbs again. And most of my 22 GB RAM sits there unused. FCPX should be WAY more aggressive with RAM.

I did that once for two events with around 5000 clips combined. Merging to a single event took more than two hours of FCPX seemingly doing nothing (almost zero CPU activity and very light disk IO). Be aware of that and don’t quit in panic 🙂

It might, but not in shorter projects. Just try and see 🙂

You can just select all in your timeline, make it a new Compound clip and then select “Duplicate as Audition”. There you go, you have two versions of your edit. Name it accordingly.

So it took 2 hours. And now folders in the resulting Events are missing. OMG.

Yep, it’s a big omission, even though SD resolutions are increasingly rare.

I did fix it with Digital Rebellion’s Pro Media Tools’ QT Edit. Cool! Thanks for your info.

Have the same issue in CS6. Did you ever manage to solve this?

No, I tried all clips on the timeline and it didn’t work. It’s probably some kind of corruption going on in the project.
