  • Intepreting PAL footage encoded with wrong AR?

    Hi!

I’ve been given more than 100 gigs of footage that has wrongly encoded aspect ratio (it’s a widescreen PAL shoot encoded to 1.09 AR). In Premiere or FCP7, I could just “interpret footage” or tick the Anamorphic checkbox.

I cannot find any way to do this in FCPX. Any tips?

    Thanks!

Yeah that is a bummer isn’t it. The easiest way is to simply resize the footage on the x axis 133% like this:

It reports needing to render, but you don’t need to at all.

Also shoot over a feedback about it to Apple.

The other way to do it is force the anamorphic flag using something like QT Edit from Digital Rebellion (it’s pricey). Here is some more info: https://alex4d.wordpress.com/2012/03/21/setting-_qt_aspect_ratio_flags/

FCP really needs to have aspect ratio controls built in. It’s amazing to me that in the huge amount go information available in the info tab there is zero about aspect ratio, PAR, or anamorphic settings, though so much video, especially the Panasonic formats still are anamorphic.

    All the best,

    Tom

Yep, it’s a big omission, even though SD resolutions are increasingly rare.

I did fix it with Digital Rebellion’s Pro Media Tools’ QT Edit. Cool! Thanks for your info.
