I have Media 100 2.1.5 running on a Late 2013 Mac Pro as described below. Running on Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4K via Thunderbolt 2. Have not done extensive testing other than to open previous projects created on 2.1.3 and 2.1.4. But everything seems OK. I have an AJA LHi, but will probably be leaving it in the 2012 Mac Pro tower. I have an OWC Helios 2 chassis it should work in with M100, but I will probably leave well enough alone there. Hope this helps. The indications are good though with my setup.

Runs fine on the Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4K with newest Desktop Video 10.1. Before that version there were audio problems, audio playback dropping out. New software seems to have solved that. Using Mac Pro 2013 Hexacore, 1TB SSD, 64GB, D-500s. Of course FCPX runs great. It even runs Media 100 2.1.5. Might be checking on AJA Kona LHi in OWC Helios 2 Thunderbolt 2 chassis sometime soon, or might just leave it in the 2012 Hexacore tower.

There is unquestionably an opportunity for competition, and it is coming in the form of Resolve, FCPX, Motion, Nuke and others you have mentioned on the NLE (with some compositing) front. Real competitors to AE, and Photoshop, not so much, not likely at the prices we have been used to when perpetual upgrades were a possibility. And certainly not for a while. Of course Adobe has to make money. But the current model seems heavy handed, at best. It would seem if their products are that good they could make up for exits/buyouts with new users. FCP X seems to be catching on from comments I have heard from educators, and they are the future. Whether younger editors stick with it is anyone’s guess.

Not all of us can afford $10,000 software packages, and I speak as the former Avid dealer in Hawaii, when systems ran $50-125k in 1990’s dollars. Also sold Media 100 which ran up to about $50k loaded. Video creativity was limited to very few in those days. (But it was a good time to be selling Avids!) Adobe seems to be headed toward a model of fewer and fewer higher end users with CC. We will see how it works out when all the promos expire and they have some true competition. And BTW, I actually like aspects of the hardware and software coming from the same company. You know who to praise and who to blame. We live in interesting times…

Not as anti-competitive as what Adobe has done with AE/Premiere and Photoshop, et al. A no exit strategy for tools that are close to monopolistic at this point that quit working when you quit paying. In my position, if it weren’t for FCPX, Motion, and it appears Resolve 11, I’m not sure where a smaller operation would go. If the software isn’t good, no one will buy the hardware, and you always have to own SOMEONE’s hardware. Not that I don’t see your point Walter, I just see Adobe as more of the problem in the marketplace currently. No one else affects so many businesses/artists at so many levels.

I have CS6 Production Suite with Premiere, et al., for it’s excellent acceptance of many file based formats, Final Cut 7 Legacy for tape input primarily, Final Cut X 10.1.1, which I intend to do most of my work on in the very near future, and even Media 100 Suite 2.1.5 which will do Red and 4K if I would ever need it, and is up to date on 10.9.2. Still like it’s simplicity and speed. All of them work on my new Mac Pro 2013 quite speedily, except for some problems with FCP 7 and lack of CS6 hardware Mercury support (hacks anyone?) which I can do on my 2012 Mac Pro tower with an Nvidia card and my 17″ MacBook Pro. I only use Premiere CS6 to view multiple file based formats and translate clips into various flavors of ProRes (usually HQ), perhaps some level legalization and lower thirds and credits. I will never rent CC. I see it only as a world of hurt down the line.

From there I drop the ProRes into whichever NLE seems most appropriate for the project. With the new Mac Pro, I do believe it will be mostly FCPX in the future, where it shines. My work is by far mostly documentary and compilations of previous video art pieces, and I rarely use effects that can’t be easily handled by Motion. So I get to avoid the Adobe morass, and still get my work done. I, for one, am very grateful for the hole that FCPX plugs for me. Glad I never spent much time learning Premiere.

Got my new Mac Pro, OS 10.9.2, Hexacore, 64 GB, 1 TB SSD, dual D500. 2.1.5 is working fine so far. Nothing heavy duty yet, but old projects from 2.1.3 and 2.1.4 are working with it. Some stuff even earlier in 2.x. On an Ultrastudio 4K right now, will probably be trying my AJA LHi in OWC Helios 2 expansion chassis, but have other things I’m working on right now.
