I did a little research for you. The “Character Recording” function is turned on in the “SYSTEM” menu under “CHAR. REC” and can be set to ON or OFF. If it is on, the data is permanently burned into the video. You can also display this metadata when playing back the image even if it is not burned into the video. This is turned ON and OFF in the menus under “DISPLAY SETUP”, “TV SCREEN”.
So, there is the possibility that you had the data displayed when the material was captured even though it was not burned into the video. If this is true, you should be able to recapture your footage. Good Luck!

The audio output through the mixer to your speakers might produce a slight delay compared to the SDI out to monitor, but it should be pretty minor. If you redirect the audio out of your computer speakers is there a delay?

I use the Panasonic BT-LH80 and it is awesome. Great picture, optional SDI input, blue gun, and built-in wave form monitor.

February 14, 2008 at 4:58 am in reply to: Can’t decide on monitor set up. Advice Please!Although there is a lot of legitimate debate about using LCDs for color correction, I have been very happy with the my Panasonic BT-LH1700. Whether to use an LCD vs CRT may depend on your final distribution channel, which you did not mention. In any event, I think your JVC option is the best of those you have outlined. The Panasonic monitor has Blue gun and a built in wave form monitor which are also great tools.

Of course you can always capture HDV from firewire. To capture uncompressed you would have to capture to a deck or computer directly from the SDI port, which does not have embedded audio on the XL-H1. If you record to tape and then capture, the footage has been compressed and is then being uncompressed by the camera.
I use a Sony MU25 which has HDMI out to a HD Connect MI from Convergent Design, which converts the HDMI signal to an HD-SDI signal with embedded audio. From there into FCP through a Kona 3 SDI input. I capture in Pro Res which is much easier and more efficient editing codec. The pictures are great and I avoid the long conform process.

No. The Kona 2 is a PCIx card and the Mac Pro has PCIe slots. While the Kona 3 comes in both flavors, I do not think they ever made a Kona 2 in PCIe version.

I can definitely second the Panny LH80. This is such a versatile piece of equipment. The pixel-to-pixel mapping allows you to view a portion of your image at a time at the native resolution. Otherwise it is 800 lines, I believe. The red focus assist is essentially peaking displayed as red outlines. The waveform monitor is also a great field tool. Blue only also is available. The thing is pretty rugged. It is not particularly cheap and the SDI option costs extra, but it will accept either a component or composite signal out of the box.

Thanks, I appreciate the information. Jim

Thanks, I should have mentioned that I have A Varizoom PG-L which I used with my Canon XL-1s. I loved it, but it does not work with the XL-H1. I emailed Varizoom to see if they have an explanation and suggestions, but have not heard back.
Canon makes a LANC control for the XL-H1 that includes controls for peaking and focus enhancement but it seems rather flimsy in its construction.

I am not sure about Anton Bauer, but I checked with IDX and the adapter for the Canon XL-H1 will not accept power in through the D-Tap. The circuitry will not appropriately down convert power input this way.
