October 1, 2007 at 2:19 amI haven’t tried one as I normally don’t use the zoom lens with our XLH1, but I would imagine one of the LANC controllers from Varizoom would work well. They make decent products that are quite affordable.

October 1, 2007 at 2:33 pmI use the Varizoom VZ Pro-L. I’ve had it now since 2001 and it is still going strong. It allows very subtle control over zoom even while zooming thanks to the large zoom speed control knob.
https://www.varizoom.com/products/controls/vzprol.htmlIf you are left-handed then check out the Varizoom VZ PG-L
https://www.varizoom.com/products/controls/vzpgl.htmlBoth are solidly built out of metal and made to last.
Good luck,

October 2, 2007 at 3:48 amThanks, I should have mentioned that I have A Varizoom PG-L which I used with my Canon XL-1s. I loved it, but it does not work with the XL-H1. I emailed Varizoom to see if they have an explanation and suggestions, but have not heard back.
Canon makes a LANC control for the XL-H1 that includes controls for peaking and focus enhancement but it seems rather flimsy in its construction.

October 2, 2007 at 6:30 pmTurns out that the PG-L is not reccommended for use with the XL camcorders. However, the PRO-L is and works just fine. The PRO-L is solidly built like a hammer – I got mine back in 2001.
