Excellent point. I guess I just assumed that he meant that he was using a texture with displacement and had just used “deformer” in general terms, which, as I read his question again, was probably a mistake on my part. You were smart to answer as you did. Thanks for the explanation.

  • Could you provide a link to the specific tutorial you are trying to follow, and describe exactly what you are trying to accomplish?

Ah, the million-dollar question – how to make it look “cool.”

Based on your previous questions it is my impression that you are a fairly new C4D user. Nothing wrong with that. It’s where we all started. I’m just a hobbyist myself, so I tend to look for tutorials that teach an interesting technique and then try to modify and expand on it to create something original. I would suggest the same for you.

The camera animations you mentioned (“cinematic zoomed in shots,” etc.) are easy enough to do once you know the basics of C4D. Also, look into using a Stage object to animate between multiple cameras. For the particle effects, in C4D look into using PolyFX, or Greyscalegorilla’s Tranform plugin. In After Effects, you could export an obj file from C4D and use it in Trapcode Form.

In short, learn as much as you can about the apps you are using. The more you know, the more you can do. When you have a specific question that’s the time to use a forum like this, but your question is just too general and subjective to be able to provide a specific answer to.

    Have fun.

    Brian,

I noticed that I can get the same result (randomized displacement) if I place the texture with displacement (with noise space set to Texture or World) on the Cloner as I get when placing the texture on the object being cloned and set the noise to “World.” Is there is an advantage to either approach?

    Thanks

There is a script, Slice it Up for After Effects, that should do what you want if you don’t want to do it manually:

It’s because you are in “Points” mode. Select “Model” mode to be able to move and rotate your spline.

It was just a friendly little jest, with no intent to upset anyone. You are absolutely correct that any forum is for questions, and I hope that no one turns you off to looking for answers here.

Learning from tutorials, and reading the manual, are how a man learns to fish so that he can eat for a lifetime, rather than being given a fish so that he can eat for a day. So said Confucius, or one of those other wise, annoying guys.

For some reason my brain wasn’t working quite right last night. While my previous answer will certainly work, I think the easiest way to do what you want is to use instances of your text spline or Motext. With the text object (Motext or spline) selected add an instance and then just duplicate it. By changing the text in the original text object all the instances will change as well.

You could use the Set Driver/Set Driven XPression.

For your master text spline or Motext, right click on “Text” in its Object attributes > XPressions > Set Driver. And then for each of the other text splines or Motext objects right click on their “Text” attribute > XPressions > Set Driven. An XPresso tag will be added to each of the linked objects, and by changing the text in the master object’s text window all the others will be changed as well.

You could then add a HUD in the viewport to the master text by again right clicking on “Text” > Add to HUD. And then when you select your master text in the object menu the HUD will appear and you can double click on it and change your text. By right clicking on the HUD in the viewport you can also choose when to “Show” the HUD (it is set to Object Active by default).
