Really? That’s weird, cos we sent out a test AVI to Adstream a little while back, who specialise in digital transmission delivery – they came back and said it was all legal and good for broadcast. I checked the levels in that same AVI and whites were 255, blacks were 0.

I’m not saying you’re lying or anything, it just doesn’t add up somewhere!?!
Do you know of any official site or any publications that state the 16-235 rule for PAL?

Sorry, that’s what I meant….so any idea if I *should* be seeing right to the edge of the picture with underscan off?

I only use my decklink for previewing at the mo, but when we get an RS422 cable plumbed in to the machine room I will be using the decklink I/O to grab/output my work and worried it might be blowing up my picutre or something and so it won’t match up with stuff outside my system…

Thoughts?

I’ve assigned a hotkey in Photoshop (F12, but you can use whatever) just by editing the keyboard shortcuts and that seems pretty painless. You will get the ‘Image outputr settings’ dialogue come up when you hit it for the first time after PS has been opened, but there after it should just update each time you hit the key.

It would be GREAT if you could have the Decklink output update live everytime you do something on the canvas (a la After Effects) so if you guys at BMD can think of a way – go for it!!!

Manually hitting a key is ok usually, unless you have a client watching your broadcast monitor while you’re working and saying “what have you actually changed in the last 5 minutes”!…Sometimes when you’re working really hard you forget to hit the key each time you change something!

Could this Kasabian vid have been done using a combination of heavily contrasting makeup/clothes, etc. and then batched live trace in Illustrator/AE to separate the elements into keyable portions you could then change the colour of later?

I imagine the outer edges of each character was roto’d though, to enable the black BG. It would take frikking ages to roto each bit of detail on the clothes and individual teeth though wouldn’t it!?

Can’t you just capture in a fast forwarding VHS on a white fame like suggested and then in AE key out the white for your alpha key of the lines? Then you could quite easily dirty up whatever picture you want to then put the lines over in AE?

OR just play the footage you want to use onto VHS directly and then grab back in? That make any sense?!?

Sorry to keep on chaps, but just to get it clear in my head could someone please confirm or deny the following: –

– Will MC7 work with a Blue & White G3 tower instead of our 9600?

– Is rendering in MC7 handled by the Mac PPC chip, or by a chip in the Avid board, or both?

– What effect would more RAM have on the app’s speed/rendering of effects?

– Could we upgrade the board to Meridian so we could run MC7 on a G4 running OS 8.6….or would we have to upgrade to a new software aswell (I think Avid Express is the next along the line?)

Thanks all, really helpful stuff here. I know it would make sense to just upgrade to an upto date system, but the money’s not there currently to do so. Therefore we need an transitional speed solution until we can dump MC altogether!

Last question -I promise- Could for instance my system (details in my sig), running Premiere Pro do the job that our slow MC7 system could just as well? Obviously there’s no hardware acceleration there, but do modern PCs running just the software and an I/O card compare to something like a h/ware based AVID of old? I mean – rendering on 3 seconds of a still graphic certainly doesn’t take 3 mins on my system!

OK, so the Avid board inside the mac processes most of the rendering, not the mac’s CPU?

As for the G3 – I did a search on here and saw someone selling Media Composer 7.2 on a G3…I’m not 100% sure which 7.? version we’ve got, but is it likely this other one I saw runs on the Meridian board then?

So yeah if it’s poss, I guess I’m just wondering if we could put the Avid board/software into a G3 tower and run it off that instead? Even a 450mhz proc and more RAM in the mac should speed things up a bit no? Or have I got it wrong?
