  • I use Extensis Suitcase with AE7.0.1 on XP and if I activate a font it pops right up in AE. Even if I de-activate it AE still lets me use it but puts a star next to it in character palette. If I change it to another font though, then try to change back, it’s no longer in the list. Which is fair enough!

    Hope that helps.

Hadn’t thought of turning a styled layer into a smart object – good call! I usually make my comp in PS and then save a copy of that to into AE with all my styled layers flattened and rasterized. That workflow really helps for replacing and altering, cheers.

Of course, in a few months we’ll all be paying an arm and leg for CS3 upgrade…won’t we? 😉 Hmm…pricey.

“Flame compositor on the desktop” ….??? WHERE? Can I have one!? Do you mean Combustion?

I suppose you could class Flame on Linux as being on a desktop…but you have to pay tens of thousands for the software and a bunch more for hardware first 😉

I’m just disappointed AE8 or CS3 or whatever isn’t 64-bit. I was kind of counting on being able to take advantage of lots of RAM of XP64 in the near future. Seems they’re not even supporting XP64 and intstead are favouring the very naff “Vista” …32bit. Hmmm.

That said, does the new multithreading capability in AE make Nucleo redundant? Or will it just add to Nucleo’s power?

I’d go for Windows XP64 personally if you have the choice – AE will be able to use 4GB of RAM and Nucleo will see as much as you have installed and even though AE is 32bit, Nucleo can use all your RAM effectively. Plus when AE8.0 comes out next month it will almost certainly be 64bit (I hope!)

Yeah, from research I’ve been doing and what some people on here have been saying, for a really fast uncompressed HD AE system you need: –

    – as many fast processors as you can afford (Quad-core Xeon chips seem fastest)

    – As much RAM as you can afford (4GB on XP32 or 16GB+ on XP64)

    – Nucleo Pro (Nucleo really needs at least 2GB per core to do it’s job well, so 2 x xeon quads = get at least 16GB ram)

    – Fast drives: 10k rpm raptor for OS/software maybe, a striped set for renders and perhaps another raptor for project files, PSDs, etc?

    – A decent OpenGL supported GFX card – don’t go overkill, but I have heard that a faster card with more onbaord memory will help in AE. Is this true?

    – A Blackmagic decklink or AJA card for broadcast monitoring.

    – A decent HD b/cast monitor

    – a couple of biggish LCDs for your GUI.

Yep and yep. Bizarre isn’t it! The interlaced (uff) AE render was the best result I could get from AE, though was heavily blurred. And the DVE in Premiere was interlaced AFAIK…just standard position keyframes in Prem.

UPDATE: I just tried a similar move in Premiere’s DVE and it looks fine!

    Go figure..

    Thanks Steve.

Yeah, I appreciate why it’s doing it..but when you do it via DVE in Editbox, or on our linear suite using clio DVE it looks fine?!?

rendering fields has indeed garnered the best result…but it’s a long way off looking any good! Bah!

I’m sure I’ve had a similar issue with scrolling credits (vertically) in AE before. We tried it in DVE in one of the suites and it looked fine. Did I read somewhere that AE isn’t too great for crawls and scrolls? Can’t for the life of me remember where I read it..Hmm…
