I am running Production Suite Premium on my PC at the moment. It contains CS2 PS+ILL, PremPRO2, Encore2, AE7 and Audition2. Works great for me.
You should still be able to get this for PC now and then upgrade to CS3 when it comes out.

Works fine here!?! Until CS3 comes out you will only get *better* performance on a PC, since the mac version isn’t Intel friendly yet.

Of course…I just ran mine and my RAID is showing up 7fps read and 7fps write for 8bit 4:2:2 SD!!?!?
Yikes, better get that checked out. That doesn’t sound right.
What I mean was – with several cores going at once with Nucleo, do you need to up your disk speeds even with SD?

Zaxwerks Invigorator or ProAnimator is probably your best bet for quick and easy to learn 3D text and simple shape manipulation and it works directly within AE. It does have some limitations for stuff like reflections and raytracing, but then so does AE itself.
From what our 3D designer has said (and Steve) Lightwave is a very good all rounder. Our guy uses that for most things. He has Softimage XSI for more complex stuff, but rarely touches it. Cinema 4D has some excellent integration with AE for stuff that’s too much for Zaxwerks. I’ve not used it, but I only hear good things about it. I’m going to try get myself a copy in the next couple of months.
Stuff like Maya and Houdini are the top of the line packages and will cost you a pretty penny, but they are only really for very advanced users.
There are a number of consumer and free programs out there aswell…Have fun!

Is that a current reel? Some of that stuff looks about 10yrs old. You could probably achieve alot of that with Zaxwerks and the more involved character work with something like Cinema 4D or Lightwave, using After Effects or Combustion to composite certain elements of it.

I think you can yeah. I just emailed Gridiron about this same thing. I’m thinking of getting a 2 x quad Xeon BOXX or HP system and I can only afford 8GB RAM at the mo. I was told you can assign it to only use 4 cores, and so on.
I’d get 4 x 2GB sticks for now – leaving more slots free for more RAM as needed.
Another thing I noticed with the new Mac Pro is you can only put in a maximum of 16GB RAM in there. most comparable Windows-based workstations will allow upto 32GB. I know it’s all silly money, but if you’re working in client-attended sessions on uncompressed 1080, you’ll want the extra oomph. Nucleo will perform best with 32GB on an 8-core. Maybe Apple have rushed this new model out?…

I was wondering about this – I’m getting a single dual-core proc, 4GB RAM and Nucleo in a couple of weeks, as a an interim setup until we go HD…Would a 2 disk RAID 0 consisting of 2 x 300GB 7,200rpm drives be OK for uncompressed SD projects on a dual-core do you think?

Another thing it looks like they’ve added there is in addition to the black vignette, there seems to be a slightly smaller one where it’s blurred and maybe the levels crushed a bit more than the main pic. Just duplicate the mask on your solid layer and paste that onto a duplicate of the footage with some gaussian blur and extra levels on it..then just play with the size/feather of the new mask. Hey presto.
The focus in/outs between shots looks like it was in camera, but I’m sure someone has some fancy plugin that help recreate it.

Well, if it’s experience with Production Studio 1.0 (CS2 apps, PPro2, AE7, Encore & Audition 2) then I run it on an XP32 system and it all seems to work very well together. Obviously for to run Premiere well you’d need a dual-core proc and fast drives and for AE you’d need lots of RAM, but I guess you kow that.
If it’s experience with Prod Premium CS3 then only Adobe testers will be able to tell you about that one, as it’s not available until AT LEAST Summer ’07!
If you’re considering it then go for Prod Premium now, via an upgrade from 1 or 2 of your CS2 apps and then I *think* you will get a preferably upgrade to the new suite when it comes out. Otherwise I guess you’ll have to wait until the summer.
