April 11, 2007 at 8:24 am in reply to: HELP!! – horizontal moving strap jitter…..

    Hi Scott,

Yeah – don’t know what happened with my original AE file. It was smooth when interlaced, but horizontally blurred and ghosted the logos that were moving. I’ve re-animated it exactly the same and rendered it fine loads of times since. I can’t seem to receate it! both Steve and I are stumped.

I did read something interesting yesterday though about making sure the movement from frame to frame was exact whole pixel values over time, this might help. I will try it aswell when I get a mo. The guy asking was on about rendering progressive, so this may fix that video look aswell?….

April 10, 2007 at 10:51 am in reply to: Removing End Credit Roll Flicker

Just to add to this…I hadn’t tried the constant integers approach to a scrolling graphic before. I’ve had some real problems getting a smooth horizontal scroll last month where I wanted to render out progressive, but the only way I could get a decent result was to render UFF.

Is this sub-pixel rendering drawback something unique to AE? I’m sure I’ve done similar scrolls in Combustion and other apps before that have worked fine without the flicker. I did wonder if it was a perculiarity with AE..

It’s all very well being able to fix it with rendering fields but if, like Liam (I’m not getting drawn into the lightbulb debate!!..) your only option is to render progressive for HD or film then AE, it seems, leaves you scuppered unless you can accomodate the position vs time adjustments in your comp…but sometimes that’s just not feesable if you’ve got specific timing and pos constraints.

April 10, 2007 at 9:02 am in reply to: Possible to have too much Memory?

Apparently CS3 will act rather like Nucleo, in that when you’re rendering or previewing it will fire up several instances of AE (each using upto 4GB) so on a 64bit OS even AE7 (with Nucleo) will use all the RAM you can throw at it..

The caveat is that the extra RAM won’t enable you to preview anymore *duration* of the comp, it will just preview that same amount faster..if that makes sense?

So, say with 4GB ram you can preview 30seconds of a particular comp at full res. If you have 16GB RAM you will still only be able to preview 30secs at once, but it will render the preview way faster.

Steve Forde will no doubt correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s the jist I got.

April 10, 2007 at 8:55 am in reply to: Can AE utilize MAC PRO 8 core system?

Another thing to consider is…you could keep the 8core machine, get as much RAM as poss (2GB is possibly not great even for the quad though tbh..if you can afford 2 more GB of OEM ram, rather than Apple certified, that would serve you well.) Set Nucleo – presumably you’ll be using that, as without it AE currently won’t use anymore than 1 core – to only use 4 of the cores, and then when you can afford more RAM set it to access all 8?

April 9, 2007 at 9:53 am in reply to: Clarify “Action Safe” and Comp Size…

Also, in the UK at least, when making commercials we have to work within a 14:9 title safe guide *ON TOP* of the usual action safe. This is because in the UK we broadcast anamorphic 16:9, but have to still allow for people on an old 4:3 CRT television where it gets scaled up and cropped to 14:9. If legal titles go outside this safe the TVC can get chucked out, likewise with minimum legal type height.

Up until recently we had to work within a 4:3 title safe on a 16:9 frame, which is ridiculous!! But some cable boxes would allow viewers to blow their picture right up to totally fill the 4:3 screen….basically until EVERYONE of your viewers is on the same plasma/LCD widescreen TV (ie: probably never) you have to work it for all eventualities. Like Steve said (I think?) even then the crop on each plasma/LCD will be slightly different, so no one will see exactly the same picture.

If you are mainly making programmes for projections at presentations/exhibitions then of course these safes don’t really apply, likewise with the web.

No, I’m not waging any wars at all! I used Macs right through college and probably still would be now if my work weren’t PC only. Our tech guy builds all the systems himself so it works out pretty well. Think i’m going to go Boxx this time though.

hope all goes well with your new toy!

April 6, 2007 at 9:20 pm in reply to: 8core vs Quad for AE

Yeah, brilliant. Thanks Steve. I’ll stick with AVI in my workflow for now and see what differences I see with TGAs when I get Nucleo next week. I just wanted to check I wasn’t going down the wrong route with AVIs. I guess it makes sense, as AE encodes a bunch of extra info with a movie file like P.A.R, etc…suppose it can’t take to long for that portion of the render.

    Cheers Steve.

April 6, 2007 at 9:15 pm in reply to: Different render folders for different projects?

Oh Bum! I was hoping someone would have a clever little work around… 🙁

It was a bit annoying in Photoshop for opening and saving to diff folders – but I’ve started opening files directly from an open Explorer window with my source files and PSD compositions in and then saving out my mattes/faces onto my RAID drive within PS…not ideal for multiple jopbs at once, but more workable.

With AE and the whole different projects thing though, I just thought it would be a bit more sophisticated. Booo.

Thanks anyway guys, I will certainly put it to Adobe!

April 5, 2007 at 4:08 pm in reply to: 8core vs Quad for AE

So with AVIs, etc. the rest of the AE instances (the other processors in essence) are only being used for previews? So does that mean renders to AVI won’t be any faster with or without Nucleo/more than one processor?

Sorry to sound a bit simple!

Interesting…well nothing will be reading or writing to my RAID at the moment! Seems it’s on the blink… 🙁

So Steve, does that mean rendering to image sequences as oppossed to AVI, QTmovs is quicker? Did I read that right? I render to AVI at the mo, just because it speeds things up on playout as I don’t have to re-interpret each sequence in Premiere. Will going back to TGA seqs (especially when I get Nucleo) make rendering alot faster?

    Thanks.
