Quick one to add – are Microssoft still supporting and updating XP64 now that Vista is coming out?

I ask because I’m thinking of going 64 when I get my new workstation and talking to BOXX systems they said to steer well clear of Vista. I may have to keep XP32 on a diff tower for all my other apps then?

I run Production Studio + Combustion + Elastic Reality + Flash + Dreamweaver + Extensis Suitcase day to day, so hopefully they’ll work on 64?

Then there’s a bunch of ripping, media player, FTP & font converting apps I’d like to keep..I wonder if they’d work..Is there a definitive list anywhere on the web of apps that DO work with XP64?

    Cheers.

I’ve been using a Wacom Intuos A4 for a couple of years now – you can get so much more done quicker and yes it reduces hand/wrist strain loads. I use it for everything these days from AE to surfing.

The hotkeys on left and right of the tablet are great aswell and the scroll strip is great for surfing..just make sure to turn it off for apps where you can accidentally nudge it. They’re all totally programmable.

It works off a separate battery backup that instantly takes over if the main power (which goes through it) fails.

Anyone working on mission critcal stuff for post/editing, etc should have one…just so happens we don’t! Not been on the blunt end of the ramifications yet, but we really should sort it out before we do!

With more and more media being stored on HDDs rather than tape these days it could get very ugly.

Surely, your PC shouldn’t go off if you have UPS? I, on the other hand haven’t, which I know is stupid. But I’m on some other ‘special’ grid to the other plug sockets apparently..but I’m pretty sure it’s not UPS protected – cos when the leccy goes, so does my PC!

Better get one I guess. You can potentially get your HDDs wiped with a power surge/cut can’t you?

It’s be nice to think so..I think toolset wise though, to compare with a Flame I reckon you’d need something like Fusion + AE running on a beast of a machine, to get the kind of seamless RT 3D environment of a Flame..I guess it also depends what kind of NLE you’re tied into and how important integration with that is?

The gap looks like it’s certainly getting tighter. To be able to have something very close to a Flame for

Ahh..I’m thinking of when you duplicate your render in the R/Queue before rendering, but just changing the o/p. If you just duplicate the o/p module on the SAME render it only renders once yeah? Job done then!

I’m not arguing that for a second – AE is my lifeline! I just find it odd that for the world’s No.1 mograph tool it struggles with scrolling text! And the no fields in preview is very annoying aswell.

    Hey, nothings perfect.

Is there another dedicated tool that is good with scrolling then?

Finaly getting my head around all this technical gubbins then – phew!

There was a time a couple of years ago when to me a PC was just, well a PC and my world was my Quantel Paintbox that had full tech support and I didn’t know how anything worked! Well that thing is like a baby’s Photoshop Elements with SDI in/out these days!…Anyone want to buy it?

It’s ten times more satisfiying knowing what’s going on under the hood, being able to tweak it yourself reasonably cheaply and more importantly explain to a client when they say “why is that JUST THE WAY IT IS?!?”

That was what I was going to suggest. But, I suppose doing the drag in and render out again thing means that the QT render will be alot quicker (surely even faster than realtime with a quick PC?) as it will be rendering just a flat image sequence, rather than building all the layers and effects to render it again? Or would it be just as quick doing 2 o/p mods?

So, maybe you wouldn’t have to wait more than a couple of minutes to get your QT version?
