I wanted to make sure that anyone who is considering purchasing the just announced 8 Core MacPro understands that if you want to use it with Nucleo Pro, or even just AE CS3’s multiprocessing capability – you MUST buy the appropriate RAM.

8 Cores are absolutely fantastic IF you have the RAM. If you purchase an 8 core workstation yet put only say 2-4GB of RAM, you will be completely annoyed by the performance.

Thought I would proactively point this out before folks run to buy one. You need to put at least 8GB, ideally 16GB of RAM in that beast to make it sing.

Are you going to have benchmarks on your website with 8 Core machine vs 4 Core vs 2 Core using Nucleo ?

Also if i remember correctly ( i have Nucleo pro only at work ) in Pro version you can chhose how many cores Nucleo uses… Can you choose to use 5 or 6 if i have only 6 Gb ram ?

    thanks

“Can you choose to use 5 or 6 if i have only 6 Gb ram ?”

I think you can yeah. I just emailed Gridiron about this same thing. I’m thinking of getting a 2 x quad Xeon BOXX or HP system and I can only afford 8GB RAM at the mo. I was told you can assign it to only use 4 cores, and so on.

I’d get 4 x 2GB sticks for now – leaving more slots free for more RAM as needed.

Another thing I noticed with the new Mac Pro is you can only put in a maximum of 16GB RAM in there. most comparable Windows-based workstations will allow upto 32GB. I know it’s all silly money, but if you’re working in client-attended sessions on uncompressed 1080, you’ll want the extra oomph. Nucleo will perform best with 32GB on an 8-core. Maybe Apple have rushed this new model out?…

Well , in my case i wouldnt be switching… I already have a MAC. 32 vs 16 gb ram is non-issue for me , i’m never gonna keep the machine THAT long. I upgrade every 2 years and i’m not investing $4000 into RAM now. I’m thinking of going eventually to 8GB , but for now 5GB will have to do. ( 1GB Apple’s default ram , plus 4GB kit from OWC or 1800-4-Memory.)

I dont want to start new flame war PC’s vs Mac , but i’ve used PC’s since DOS 5.0 and switched couple years ago to MAC. I couldnt be happier.
One thing to consider though is pathetic GPU’s Apple has at the moment. Their “reasonable” priced GPU’s max out at 1900XT which is about 1 generation and 1 refresh behind PC world. Word is they’ll have Ati’s 2800XT available when they release it in MAY so i’m getting 7300GT for now with my MAC for and later upgrade to something more adequate.

No, I’m not waging any wars at all! I used Macs right through college and probably still would be now if my work weren’t PC only. Our tech guy builds all the systems himself so it works out pretty well. Think i’m going to go Boxx this time though.

hope all goes well with your new toy!
