I could be wrong, but I think you’d need XP 64bit to use more than 4GB RAM?…XP32 only sees 4GB for the whole system (less than that if you have PCI-Express) so you probably wont be able to effectively use more than about 3GB to share between the 4 instances of AE. From what Steve Forde of Gridiron has said in the past (do a cow search on PCI black hole and there’s a tonne of stuff about RAM and AE/Nucleo) 3GB shared between 4 proc cores will not be at all effective, you need at least 1GB per core.

Go for XP64 and then fill her up I say!

CS3 will indeed replicate the functionality of Nucleo standard..but will not have the features of Nucleo Pro (spec render/preview, etc..) For $50 it seems a no-brainer to buy Nucleo if you have a dual core machine, then when you can afford it upgrade to Pro 2 when CS3 comes out!

Have you got lots of footage?..If so is it on a fast RAID drive? That might help..

Other than that I’d say more processing power maybe, or GFX card upgrade?

May 25, 2007 at 7:26 am in reply to: Mixdown – crackling and popping?!?

    Hi Gene,

    Thanks for your reply…

I got the audio in via emailed 44.1khz WAVs and ripped WAVs off audio CD. I initially let AE convert them to 48khz in the render (it is for broadcast onto Digibeta) but then thought that might be the cause of the problem..so I converted them all to 48khz in Audition and replaced all my assets in AE.

I rendered out of AE uncompressed AVI with 48khz stereo audio and my Premiere project is the same (albeit a BMD project, but all footage is totally uncompressed)

The popping seems to arise on mixdown in Premiere – as when I listen to the timeline with my AE audio on one track and SFX I put on in Premiere on another it sounds fine. When I then mix all the audio down to one stereo channel the problem starts.

    Anymore thoughts?

Thanks Joe, but my brain is fried after reading that!?!

I still can’t quite figure out if 17 vertical pixels is the same as 17 TV lines! I fear I may be being incredibly thick here…

Does anyone who knows the $64,000,000 question fancy spelling it out for me?

    🙁

I find it baffling that you still can’t add a solid drop (a fake directional extrusion) in Photoshop. Paintbox Express could do that 15 years ago!

I know you can use Illustrator’s extruder filter but it is very clumsy and obviously not true 3D, but why not add that to PS or something a little simpler? AE does have ways round it like mentioned, but Zaxwerks is so cheap and brilliant for that. your best bet.

“Sizing boxes” …do you mean boxes with the square handles in the corners and crosshair in the middle? If so that’s VERY odd!

If it’s just a line around each layer, then you could check stuff like – maybe you have a stroke applied to the layer? Or maybe they’re weren’t cutout properly in Photoshop? Open one of the muzzle shots in PS and expand the canvas size and change to a contrasting BG colour and see if it has an edge on it?

    Other than that not sure.
