Mixdown – crackling and popping?!?
I’m really hoping someone can help me with this…
I’ve had an animation job for a client on today, exclusively done in AFX….however after the render I had to add some sound FX in premiere and after a mixdown (needed to compress the mix in Audition and then playout to tape) my audio has random popping and crackling all over it…any thoughts?!?
For reference, my unmixed project is as follows: –
Blackmagic Design 16×9 PAL sequence (uncompressed SD 8bit 4:2:2)
uncompressed AVI on video 3
some cut up SFX on audio 1
full VO on audio 3All audio is uncompressed 48khz 16bit stereo.
To mixdown I am selecting all relevant clips in the timeline and cntrl+M (render work area) My render settings are uncompressed and audio is same as before.
When I drag the rendered AVI back into another timeline I am getting this interference or whatever on the mixed audio?!?
Any thoughts guys? I feel like I’ve tried everything! (tried turning off unused audio & video tracks just incase – no joy.)

First off, how did you get the audio onto your computer. Was it captured via BM breakout box, or some other way?
Secondly, At what point in the process did you first hear the poping? AE, Audition? or Premiere. Black Magic has settings in AE, and Premiere. If you start a project in AE, and you set it up using the BM defaults for your comp, you must use the same ones in Premiere. Audition just assumes the wave properties of each exported avi, so should not add the popping. I have a hunch that somewhere along the line you might not have selected the same settings in Premiere that you used in AE. You might try to create a new project in Premiere, using the same BM AE settings, and reimport your project.

I got the audio in via emailed 44.1khz WAVs and ripped WAVs off audio CD. I initially let AE convert them to 48khz in the render (it is for broadcast onto Digibeta) but then thought that might be the cause of the problem..so I converted them all to 48khz in Audition and replaced all my assets in AE.
I rendered out of AE uncompressed AVI with 48khz stereo audio and my Premiere project is the same (albeit a BMD project, but all footage is totally uncompressed)
The popping seems to arise on mixdown in Premiere – as when I listen to the timeline with my AE audio on one track and SFX I put on in Premiere on another it sounds fine. When I then mix all the audio down to one stereo channel the problem starts.
Anymore thoughts?

I have never seen this, and have used 44.1 stuff frequently converted, and mixed in Premiere, with AE audio. Usually with music bed. The only work around I might try would be to export each track out of Premiere, and mix them in Audition multi track. Maybe try small segment to see if that would fix the audio, or give some other clue as to what is going on. Possibly some kind of mix down peak distortion or phase issues, I don’t know.
