There was a fully functional beta up for free download on the site..but I think as soon as they properly released it the beta needed a licence purchasing to run it again. You usually get a watermarked versiohn of the software, but for something like Mocha where you usually export the data that wouldn’t work, so I’d assume any demo s/ware would just inhibit the export command?..Just go on there and check.

Malcolm,

Do you mean you want to move the layer in the timeline WITHOUT moving it’s keyframes? Just hit the U key and put the time marker on the first keyframe for that layer, note the time down. Select ALL kfs for that layer, cut…move the layer where you want it and then paste the KFs back onto the layer at the point the first one was before. does that make sense?

Otherwise, if you’re trying to move the layer and want it’s KFs to go with it, then…well that’s automatically what happens.

Can you be more specific?

I think I know what it was…I think something was/is up with the registry..seemed to be hogging all the CPU. A shut down and leave off for 5 mins seemed to clear the memory and we’re ok now. Still a bit choppy in Premiere intermittently. Might do a check on all my disks overnight!

Hi Mike,

It’s uncompressed 50i PAL SD. I’ll try switch AVG & McAfee off, but I’ve always had them running with no probs before though..

As for defragging – I think Windows is set up to defrag every night, so shouldn’t be that.

Developments though…I’ve now noticed that Encore is having problems playing back m2v files in the timeline..and they’re on a separate drive!?!

It looks like my system in general is having problems…anyone think of any checks or tests I could try? Typically our IT guy is away this week!

One other thing….I’ve just noticed my 600GB RAID drive has only 25% space free. Could this be the problem? What is the minimum percentage capacity that should be kept free on your video drive?

Hi Skarab,

Thanks for the reply…I’m not sure this will work for me. Apart from the fact that you are still putting the same footage in different timelines (this is what’s causing Encore to think it’s all diff footage and therefore hiking my project size up) I don’t think diff segments strung together in one timeline, or several timelines played after each other gives a smooth ride between them. I mean there are big pauses when I’ve tried it in the past.

I want to keep my play all piece as one file, but wanted to avoid splitting and re-encoding all the other sections aswell.

Anyone else got any ideas? Surely if you’ve only got one bit of footage in a project then the file size should be not much bigger than that, rather than 1 bit of footage in 7 diff timelines = 7 times the data!?! I *MUST* have this wrong surely.

Might be a bit controversial…but have you considered going back to Premiere? It really couldn’t be more seamless between AE and PPro (since CS2 version at least) because you have dynamic link and don’t have to render your AE comps – just drop them into your timeline and it links you back to the comp in AE for tweaking.

I’ve not used FCP much, but I am told there is negligible difference between FCP and PPro these days..it’s worth a look, especially as you haven’t really started getting your head around FCP yet. You can transfer over any keyboard shortcuts to Prem though. If you work mainly in AE it makes sense to me.

On the AE annoying re-renders side..Nucleo Pro 2 is invaluable. It stores RAM cache much better than AE and of course has background/spec rendering and previewing – so you can work while it renders.

Our editor is a Quantel based system, so I have to playout AE faces & mattes via premiere, which is a pain..but if I was an editor too I’d go all Adobe I reckon.

If you’ve got Nucleo it will suck your RAM dry and use it for AE.
