You might be able to pick up a cheap secondhand version of Elastic Reality off Ebay..they don’t make it anymore, but it is excellent and is basically the toolset that became Re: Flex.

    Hi,

Has anyone else used these Obvious FX plugins Jerzy talks about? Anyone noticed any problems installing them/conflicts/performance knocks? I just don’t really want to install on my work machine unless I know they’re kosher if you know what I mean!…

    Thanks.

August 5, 2007 at 9:48 am in reply to: Do I need 1920×1280 res LCD monitor for GUI?

    Thanks for info R,

I think I’m going to go with the 2 x 20″ Dells…ALOT cheaper than the 24s and still much bigger than my current 17″ 1024×768 CRTs. I currently have AE setup with comp/project windows and timline on the left and everythign else on the right display. A bit of extra space will be great, but if I went all the way to 2 x 24″ than I’d have to find some stands for my speakers, cos they’d take over the entire desk!

The only thing I’m wondering is if there are any pro apps that specify a 1920×1280 res screen? I think Shake’s specs were like that, but I’m on a PC anyway…Fusion or any 3D apps need that res? I’m just trying to plan ahead as much as poss…

I’ll be keeping my Sony CRT b/cast mon for a while anyway and maybe by the time we finally upgrade to HD the LCDs will be upto scratch.

I thought so..I mean presumably I’ll only be viewing AE, etc in the same way I do now, except my comp/preview window will be at a smaller percentage zoom size for 1080, than for SD and all a bigger screen will enable is that window to be a little bigger and give me a bit more space, right?

I know this sounds very niave..I am just checking there’s nothing else about working in HD I haven’t taken into consideration?

Yep – there’s a Dell sale on..precisely why I’m probably going for them instead of Apple! Also, I’ve read that the higer-end Del displays have the exact same screen as the Apples..

    Thanks for reply Glenn.

  • Honestly, give this a look: https://www.imagineersystems.com/products/mocha/

It uses a different method of tracking to traditional 2D and 3D point trackers. It won’t spit out Z info for 3D apps, but if you’re using AE it will export solid 4 point tracks to AE and tackle just about any problem shots – excessive motion blur, points going out of frame, grain or noise, fluctuating highlights, etc.

I just bought it and it looks awesome. If you need a 3D matchmover though I guess Boujou, PF Track or Syntheyes is the way to go.

July 30, 2007 at 12:46 pm in reply to: Layer styles in CS3?

    Thanks for the info Filip,

That’s great news! Sounds a bit fumbly to edit and create, but defo a huge improvement.

I agree the twirl downs can be annoying to spin back up one by one to gain GUI realestate, but you can you the hotkeys for effects and stuff like position, rotation, etc.. (E, P or R respectively) or shift-click them for several at once. This doesn’t however work for editing text properties and when you hit ‘E’ for effects it twirls them all open. At least it does in AE7.

Haven’t got CS3 yet, so can’t look at the manual! Ta for info anyway.

So….no ‘grouping’ of layers in the timeline yet? I guess pre-comping is the best we got…

[Darby Edelen] “If the text was created in AE then you should use Create Outlines.”

Or if it was created it Photoshop use Layers>Convert to Editable Text first and then create outlines.

A Wacom Intuos 3 tablet & pen. Best bit of cash you’ll spend in a while I’d hazard.
