Turned out it was a comp I had applied some CC to and then Radial Fast Blur + Shine. It needed to be continually rasterized for the shine to work properly and that was crashing it. I took the shine+radial off and applied them inside that comp, expanded comp size to allow for bleed out and then it worked!?!

Very random. Seems like a fairly normal workflow for me, but AE just goes mental with it and can’t handle it. Here’s another weird anomaly – this section in question WOULD preview with continual rast on, but wouldn’t render!

    Go figure.

Sooner we get CS3 the better!

Thanks Kevin, I didn’t know AE’s CC effects used open GL…didn’t think ANYTHING in AE actually made use of it! 😉

I actually have OGL turned off completely anyway – due to Knoll Light Factory getting nasty with it on..

    Anymore ideas?

    Thanks,

May 23, 2008 at 11:43 am in reply to: dodgy join on motion tile/CC sphere?

Sorry Dave, I should have been more specific..I am working in square pixels, the main host comp is 6720 x 784 pixels, but the comp I applied CC Sphere in was sq pixels and the comp was created by dragging the clouds pic onto new comp icon. Any HD footage I’m using is uncompressed 1080i/p.

All that said – even in the immediate comp that the CC sphere effect is in – you still see the tearing.

Any chance you could have a go at your end Dave? I’m tearing my hair out here! I tried feathering off the edges of the pic, but that just makes matters worse and wouldn’t work anyway as it’s got a motion tile applied aswell (as per A.Kramer’s earth project.)

Well I got the clouds from NASA, so I’d like to think they’re fairly accurate. Does someone mind using that source file on the link to make a sphere themselves and let me know if you get a join at your end? Trying to work out if it’s the image or the way I’ve set it up…

Dave – HD is sq pixels anyway. I just dragged the picce from project window onto new comp button and built it from there.

  • Have you got an Intel box (Mac Pro) or a G5? They are two different machines. You might have space in the Mac Pro (new one) if you use the spare optical drive bay aswell (I *think* you can fit 2 more drives in there) There is a comany who makes a kit to do this…

I remember when I was looking to setup an all-in-one HD playback in FCP & AE machine all contained in tower it was doable in RAID5. you’ll need something like a CalDigit hardware RAID controller, a bunch of fast drives and then you should get 1-2 streams of uncompressed HD depending on your setup. Many more layers than that and you’ll need to look at an external box.

Look up ‘hardware raid’ or ‘uncompressed HD raid’ or something like that here on the cow and you should find my posts/threads about this. I haven’t got time to search myself at the mo.

I have one clip at h.264 and one is Sorenson 3 (these are lo-res placeholder clips downloaded from image libraries) but annoyingly they’re not in the part of the timeline that is crashing!

    Anymore thoughts Dave/All?!?

Hi Dave, these are all animation or MJPEGB QT movs *I think*…will check tomorrow morning. It’s bizarre..one minute the exact same bit of the timeline will play/scrub fine…the next this happens. I thought it might be a network bottleneck..but it’s done it when there’s only me accessing the Xserve via 1GigE, so can’t be that. Hmm…will check that codec thing though Dave, thanks.

May 9, 2008 at 9:41 am in reply to: Weird render problems??

This is a new job for me, but our company has been doing these big 5 screen wide HD comps for a few years now, initially on dual-core machines. We now have 4 quads and 1 octocore mac and only recently have I and one other collegue been having this problem…a week or so after we bought Nucleo actually! Weird thing is, I’m getting errors with Nucleo switched off now aswell.

May 7, 2008 at 8:42 am in reply to: Weird render problems??

Hi all – thanks for replies…

I didn’t test without Nucleo last night in the end – thought I’d try rendering a local TGA seq, then a QT in the queue first – to try eliminate one thing at a time. Thought it might be that I’m rendering full-res over the network, from the network if that makes sense (all media and project files are stored/read from our XServe and renders are generally done back to it aswell) but that didn’t work!…

My full-res TGA seq got about halfway through (not at the same point as before – I checked and nothing of any real note comes in at that point, so I doubt it’s an effect or particular layer) In AE I got the ‘overwrite…’ dialogue box again and in the render queue both things I set to go last night are still ‘queued’ despite the first one rendering to halfway.

I have tried all manner of reboots, reinstalls, etc to no avail. I am on Quicktime 7.4.1 and my colleague is on 7.4.5, so I can’t see how it can be a QT issue.

I will try the non-Nucleo render tonight to see if it’s that, but my problem is that with one core it might not even get finished doing the render in one night! It’s eating into my working day, but can’t be helped I guess.

If anyone from Gridiron or any long-standing Nucleo users has any ideas that’d be awesome. I’ll post this in Gridiron forum aswell, but I figured AE forum gets the most traffic..

    Jim.
