May 6, 2008 at 4:04 pm in reply to: Weird render problems??

No, I’m on Mac aswell Dave. 10.4.11.

This is becoming a real problem – if it’s a Nucleo thing then this problem cancels out it’s purpose if we can’t render more than one thing in a queue. Switching it off to render means we might aswell not have it! My collegue is having the same problem on his 8core leopard machine aswell…

I’m doing a render test tonight *without* Nucleo to see if it’s that. I thought it might be a QT thing initially, but my workmate is rendering TGA seqs and having same problem so it’s not that.

As for high-res renders not finishing AT ALL, I will try a full res TGA sequence to a local drive and see if that will finish…will report back tomorrow!

May 3, 2008 at 12:51 pm in reply to: 32 bpc to 8bpc on export?

It wouldn’t Dave…the layering/blending between colours will be alot more true to life in 32bit float. Even if you output to 8bit it will look different to if you did the CC/layering in 8bit>8bit. Obviously if you can output to 32 or 16bit aswell it will look even better. You’ll get nasty banding in soft gradients in 8bit.

Thanks guys. Looks like this piece of footage has been badly interlaced before I got it then..I’ll just have to live with it. Will try the Frame Mix thing on a progressive sep render and see how it comes out. FieldsKit is really cheap though, so might give that a go aswell

April 20, 2008 at 9:04 am in reply to: Maximizing AE System

We still use AE7 Pro with the standard version of Nucleo on a mixture of Tiger & Leopard machines – seems to work a treat. One of our machines is the new(ish) 3.2 octocore with 8GB RAM and that thing screams through renders and previews. That system with 16-32GB RAM would be insane. Not sure if NP2 is unstable with Leopard though…we are thingking of getting it to try out.

    Can you be more specific?!?

Do you have pixel aspect ratio switch on? Do you have it set to best or draft quality? Are you viewing at full resolution at 100%? Sorry if I’m being rude, but have you ever used After Effects before?

April 15, 2008 at 12:50 am in reply to: Need Help! Do you charge clients for Rendering?

I used to (reluctantly) charge for rendering at my old facility…due to my boss’s say so. Our PCs were pitifully slow and I thought it was a bit of a cheek tbh, so I used to at least half the render hours to charge out. This was in a facility environment though where it is needed there and now (so you’d have thought we’d be using sh*t hot hardware no?!?) so overnight renders weren’t really applicable. But generally you should factor in *something* for rendering, if only to cover wear on your system(s)..but this shouldn’t be much. I mean – you charge machine time for pro VTRs to cover head wear, so it’s similar..

Nucleo Pro kind of renders all this irrelevant anyway (sorry for pun) – just background render and everybody’s happy! We charge by the job at my new place – but they’re longer projects over several weeks/months so that makes total sense. Unless you’re a facility with the very best gear I think quote per job is probably the norm.

  • Sounds like Apple are deliberately alienating and holding back the software competition…dangerous move! Lets be honest…no one is going to totally go over to Motion/Aperture from AE/Photoshop are they! Will we see the majority of the creative industry move back over to Windows as a result? No thanks..only just got away from buggy buggy PCs.

Why is nothing ever simple? A 64 bit AE would be amazing for what we do (10-30 minute mograph work on a 7000 pix wide canvas) Thank god for Nucleo is all I can say.

If you go to his site (videocopilot.net) then there’s a tute called ‘Light Streaks 2’ which shows a workaround for the adjustment layer colourizing thing and also animating the stroke with a null instead of a light. He composites it over a street scene.

March 25, 2008 at 9:11 pm in reply to: SONY BVM CRTs?

I finally got my hands on this monitor (20G1E), with control unit, for a song! Thanks for the info though Rennie – didn’t know that about the phosphors. They’re like gold dust these CRTs and for SD broadcast work an absolute must.

Anyone know if these monitors would be any use for viewing downconverted HD via a Decklink/AJA card?..Or is the colour space totally wrong for HD? I also have a HD Link SDI>DVI converter and may get a 23″ Cinema display for true HD monitoring later on (minus the £3k+ for a ‘proper’ HD grading monitor) but just wondered if there’s any point downconverting and viewing on the BVM in the meantime?

    Thanks.

Do you guys know that Andrew has put up a new tutorial on his site covering exactly this!? Or, is it because of this thread he’s done it…
