AE CS3 – WIN XP – 8GB RAM – 4 CORE CPU – what settings ??
Posted by Pawel Truchan on April 11, 2008 at 1:04 pmHi.
I’m running on:
Windows XP Professional SP2
Intel S975XBX2 mainboard
Intel core 2 quad 2.4Ghz Q6600 CPU
8GB of Kingstone HyperX 800MHz DDR2 RAM
Blackmagik Decklink Video Card
Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX graphicsSo the question is. How should I set-up my AE (cs3) and system for best performance possible. Will I be able to use all 8GB in AE (or do I have to go for 64-bit OS?).
All suggestions are welcome.

April 11, 2008 at 6:06 pmyou’ll need a 64 bit OS for more than 2 GB in AE. (Although with Nucleo Pro 2 running with AE, the extra Ram should help).
I am pretty sure AE runs on Vista 64, but don’t be surprised if a lot of your other non-adobe software does not. 64 Bits is still a can of worms.

You might see if you can find reports comparing Vista 64 and XP 64 compatibility with various applications.

On another note, I think it’s somewhat ironic that Adobe has delayed 64-bit support in its CS suite for OS X… the only rock solid 64-bit OS that it currently releases on.

April 11, 2008 at 9:34 pmI read an article that said Adobe isn’t doing 64bit CS4 for Mac because Apple told them to build everything on Carbon, and now Apple has moved on to Cocoa. In order to port over to Cocoa, Adobe would have to change over 1 million lines of code, and they can’t do that by CS4… I don’t know how true any of this is, just something I read on teh Interweb.
8core MacPro, 3.0 GHZ, 10GB RAM, OSX 10.5.2
DualCore 2.0 GHZ, 2GB RAM, OSX 10.4.11AE7 on both for now.

I doubt that’s true, although it may be partly based on truth. I think the issue is that Carbon was Apple’s temporary solution for developers to develop for both OS 9 (Classic) and OS X in the early days. I was under the impression that Carbon was dying as soon as it was born, that Apple intended for everything to be developed using Cocoa under OS X.
Adobe essentially put off porting from Carbon to Cocoa because there was no need to use Cocoa, but now that Apple is finally cutting the cord and putting Carbon out to pasture Adobe is upset at themselves for not seeing it coming. That’s my interpretation of the situation anyway.

April 12, 2008 at 3:49 amIt is true. Completely true.
Adobe will not be bringing CS4 to the Mac in 64bit, it will be 32bit only.
Apple didn’t give developers the kind of leadtime they needed to retool their programs and so many tools from 3rd parties are likely to stay 32bit for some time.

April 13, 2008 at 2:12 pmSounds like Apple are deliberately alienating and holding back the software competition…dangerous move! Lets be honest…no one is going to totally go over to Motion/Aperture from AE/Photoshop are they! Will we see the majority of the creative industry move back over to Windows as a result? No thanks..only just got away from buggy buggy PCs.
Why is nothing ever simple? A 64 bit AE would be amazing for what we do (10-30 minute mograph work on a 7000 pix wide canvas) Thank god for Nucleo is all I can say.
AE7 Pro – Nucleo – Mocha v1.0.1 – PS CS3 – FCP 5
MacPro Quad 3GHz / ATI 1900XT / 8GB RAM / OSX 10.4.9

Production Studio CS2 – Combustion 3 – Mocha v1.0.1
Win XP Pro 32 / Intel P4 3GHz / 2GB RAM / GeForce FX5200 / DeckLink Pro / Roland DS-5s / Sony BVM-20G1E / 2 x Dell 2007FP / Wacom Intuos 3 A4 / 110GB/80GB/600GB RAID-0 -

2) 64bit WINDOWS and AAFX

April 17, 2008 at 9:33 pmif your looking for people who think of themselves as AE gods, there are other forums for that.
The short answer is a multicore or multiprocessor machine with 2 GB of RAM per core will give you the best possible performance with Nucleo Pro 2.
If you don’t have a multiprocessor or multicore machine, Nucleo Pro does nothing.
However, after 3 GB, windows x32 will not be able to utilize the extra RAM. For that, you want XP 64 which can take advantage of more than 3 GB RAM.
Of course, with XP 64, you have a whole other mess of problems – hardware and software don’t always like XP 64 or Vista 64.
So, honestly, if you want the best possible performance with the least headaches, Run AE on a MAC with Nucleo Pro.
don;t get me wrong, you will definately see a performance increase on windows with AE and NP2 – no question – I’ve been using AE with the various incarnations of Nucleo for years – but given the desire for a high performance, no hassle setup it’s your best bet.
Nucleo Pro is the best thing to ever happen to AE, so unless you have a single processor without a dual core in your system, buy it, or at least test the free trial version.
