But I’ve had it work for video clips!! And it’s so amazingly useful when it works — I once did a one hour video and I highlighted the entire time line and changed every clip to 1 second duration and it worked perfectly (I think that was FCP 4.??)

Even today with 5.0.4, it works about 50% of the time with video clips. But I can’t seem to figure out why it works sometimes and not others….

November 16, 2006 at 7:03 pm in reply to: another motion tracking question…yikes

Yes it is possible!! Simply motion track your handheld footage and then edit the “target track” to be your window reflection layer… then “APPLY” the motion tracking data to that reflectiopn layer

In motion tracking your handheld footage you’ll need to pick a good spot to track for example the door handle of your car — something with well defined edges and good contrast.

As for your keying problems, take a look at Andrew Kramer’s superb tutorial on greenscreening a car:

    Check out:
    Tyler Paul’s Toonificator V2.0 a MASSIVE overhaul

11 posts down from yours — you can download Tyler’s files and then in the project window control click Tyler’s movie “Everythingilluminated.mov” and “replace footage” with your file… read Tyler’s readme.txt for good instructions on how to midify the look….

    Great work, Tyler!!

Ooops — sorry Jodal. Just re-read your post. You have tried Autotrace…

    Have you tried “Autotrace”

    Layer–> Autotrace

Should do what you need it to…

Try this (from the AE help manual) — I just used this technique and it was miraculous at cleaning up bad/noisy greenscreen plates:

Removing grain in frame sequences (6.5)

The Temporal Filtering controls of the Remove Grain effect use a statistical algorithm to blend the current frame with previous and next frames. These controls are particularly effective in removing compression artifacts from DV or video footage. Because temporal filtering works on the basis of differences between frames, it is useful only for sequences.

To properly evaluate the results of this filter, the sequence must be reviewed in real time, either with a RAM preview or by rendering to a file.

To add temporal filtering to a sequence:

Apply the Remove Grain effect to your image. (See Removing grain from an image (6.5).)

Try the following techniques if you want to improve the results:
To quickly reduce the noise of a sequence that has a lot of buzzing noise, set the Noise Reduction value to zero and the Temporal Filtering Amount to 100%, and render the sequence.
To speed up previews, apply temporal filtering to your sequence after all the settings for a single frame have been adjusted.
To retain a layer’s effects and also apply temporal filtering to it, precompose the selected layer (choose Layer > Precompose), and then apply the Remove Grain effect to that layer.

    CB-

We did a Feature film and had identical problem —

Make certain that both your FCP sequence settings and AE comp settings are set to a frame rate of 23.976 — not 23.98 — I’ll bet you $5 that fixes it!!

But, any work that was rendered at 23.98 and not 23.976 will have to be re-rendered aty 23.976

Or use Render–> FRACTAL (not fractal noise)

    choose set choice: Julia
    add 2 keyframes to magnification: 1st one -13 (that’s negative 13) and the 2nd one 100
and watch a magnificently colorful acid trip present itself…
