Thank you both for the advice. I’ve done a fair amount of research, and it’s pretty confusing to me, due to the array of variables. I’m getting between 1 to 2 GB/s read and writes, on my current SAS RAID, and I haven’t found any 8-drive USB-C or NAS that gets close to 2 GB/s. New SAS drives are available, but they’re not huge, and they’re not 6 GB/s.

Do I need 2 GB/s? Not yet. I’ve only gotten one RED RAW 8K source project so far, and even that doesn’t need that much io for a single stream. But, I’m trying to get ahead of the technology for a change.

According to this, 2 GB/s or better may be desirable for me in the future.

A proxy workflow can address the lack of io.

Doing my research, and please correct me if I’m wrong, a SAN would cap at 10 Gb/s – the speed of 10 Gb ethernet, whereas a SAN using USB-C would allow for a theoretical 40 Gb/s. Right?

What are best options for hardware? I’ve only found one model with a 5 year warranty, the outrageously priced G-Technology G-SPEED Shuttle XL. Most other DIY enclosures I’ve found have a one or three year warranty. Some are so cheap compared to the G-Speed (not available w/o drives), I wonder how reliable they would be.

Any advice for taking your previous advice, and ditch my old tech for new tech? What’s the best value that’s also reliable?

I have doubts about HighPointTech.

I’m not afraid of spending $7K, if I have to. Most of my projects coming in now have around a TB of source media.

There are a variety of export options in the freeware Aegisub for OSX.

I use it to convert the .srt files I make in Premiere into a format that works properly on YouTube and Vimeo.

I doubt it, but you can run a simple experiment by making a Sequence with only a linked Ae clip, and run the Collect process. You’ll get a confirmation in about ten seconds.

This product is called ArGest Backup now. They released a 4.0.1 version ten days ago. It’s still not working right.

I was able to write a tape, but I couldn’t restore from it immediately afterwards. The app doesn’t recognize any of the tapes in my library – keeps telling me to load the correct tape.

Tolis Support is MIA as well. They haven’t responded to my support ticket at all since reporting the bugs that make their product useless in their latest release over a week ago. And, I’ve paid them in advance for support.

My guess is that’s your problem. No x.x.0 version of Pr has been bug-free or reliable, in my experience. I tried 13.0.0 for a while, and many of my Lumetri Color settings would shift upon reopening projects.

I’m still on 12.1.2, because it’s solid, and discovered to my horror that Adobe took that build off the list of legacy versions in the CC installer app, and if it becomes corrupted, I’m going to be forced to using a more buggy version.

You may find this unsatisfactory, but perhaps you’d be better off using Colorista IV.

How did you make them? That info could be important.

They don’t look fast enough to be strobing, but perhaps your Pr sequence is 23.976 and your Dynamically Linked or Ae Comp render is 29.97, or something of that nature.

I’m back to thank you for your advice. I ordered the second configuration on my OP, but went ahead with the Radeon Pro Vega II GPU. What the hell. I didn’t want to regret buying an under-powered GPU in a few months.

And let me offer this advice, if anybody else is considering this. I bought from an authorized Apple VAR, and saved about $700 from Apple’s price on their web site. I also ordered the 6 x 64 GB RAM kit from OWC for less than a third of Apple’s price.

My comment about the first trash can comes from my experience on a client’s site who have two of them. They got the bad GPUs that Apple ‘fessed up to that put tears and black spots in playback and renders in Premiere. We found out after researching this was epidemic. And as I recall (as it’s been a while), the first cheese-grater MacPro1,1 was fairly quickly (for Apple) made obsolete.

Apple rarely ever gets their 1.0 of anything right. Certainly not their operating systems.

I’ve since found another thread about the iMacPro here on the Cow, but was in regard to FCPX, although some Pr users chimed in. Consensus seems to be good, but I’m really mostly interested in whether they are a good fit for Premiere, the app I use for 80% of my paying work.

Due to the fact I have the Titan X GPU the most powerful available when I bought it, and would be ditching CUDA altogether if I got the iMacPro, I’m wondering if my real-time performance would be better or worse in Premiere.
