No. It would mean a major change in my hardware setup. I have a colleague who was out of business for a month after buying an iMacPro, and eventually got rid of it and is now using a regular iMac.

I’m hoping somebody who has an iMacPro can chime in and tell me that it’s working great.

I would also need to get a Thunderbolt PCIe expansion to run my ATTO RAID and LTO drive.

I need some deductions for my tax year. I’m not counting on the new MacPros to be anything but shite, as their first gen trash can and MacPro1,1 were. Nor does it look like they’ll be out this year anyway.

Yes, it has happened to me. Working fine, then not working can point to something you installed or changed around the time it stopped working.

I see you’re on 10.14.1. I NEVER upgrade to any OSX until it’s 10.x.5 or greater. Maybe roll back to High Sierra 10.13.6.

Erik, you’ve given me a couple of ideas to try. One is reverting the OS to 10.11.x, which would be extremely painful, given that OSX Mail and other apps would likely rebel at a roll-back. Otherwise, I have a Quadro K5000 in my closet that I replaced with the Titan X. I might reinstall that, and see if anything improves.

I’m almost 100% certain that I’ve been playing in Pr without dropped frames in CC2018. A few months ago, I bought another used 5,1 late 2012 that has six 3.46 Mhz cores that replaced my other 5, 1 late 2012 with six 3.03 cores. Both were running 10.13.6. It defies logic I would get worse performance, but seeing as how that was the last big change I made, seems to indict it as a potential suspect. I could swap those as well, but that creates a licensing gauntlet for a bunch of plug-ins and other apps.

I did consider going to Windows after Apple introduced that silly trash can. The only road block was that my LTO app is Mac only BRU PE. I would have to do my tape backups and restores over a gigabit network. That was before 10GB ethernet was as widely available and as cheap as it is now.

Maybe it’s time to reconsider. I’m 67, and work has been coming in regularly. I only plan to retire when my clients stop calling. I’m not too keen on spending $10-20K on the new MacPro, whenever it comes out. My other consideration is getting a used iMac Pro, which are still around $5-6K, and a Thunderbolt PCIe adapter so I can keep using my RAID and LTO without buying new hardware.

The reason I have stuck with the towers was primarily to use Pr with CUDA. The Titan GPU has made a huge difference in real-time playback (although at reduced resolution), and rendering is so fast that long renders and exports are a vestige of bygone days (I deal mainly with short form – under five minutes). But, since CUDA support is also disappearing on OSX, some adjustments seem to be in order.

CC18 is stable, and as long as it’s working, and I can deliver product, I can live without the one thing in CC19, the change to the color wheel, that I’d like to use if I could. Adobe keeps adding crap for amateurs that makes it less stable.

I have tried almost everything you suggested already. I’m no babe in the woods on Premiere, and I have a routine I perform at every sign of trouble that includes what you suggested as well as uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

I’ve also found some testers for my GPU to see if that’s the weak link, but it seems to be performing gangbusters on renders. I just installed XRG, which displays a graph of CPU and GPU usage, and they’re going full speed ahead. However, my suspicion is that the GPU is somehow responsible.

If I switch Pr to the Software Only Renderer, my sequences play longer before the indicator turns yellow. It eventually turns yellow no matter which of the Renderer options I select: CUDA, Metal, Open CL, or Software Only.

What I haven’t tried yet is installing Resolve. I’m going to put that on my list.

I can get through my projects and deliver on time. It’s just annoying that I can’t play HD at all in Premiere without seeing frames dropping. Everything else seems to be A-OK.

It’s been a while since I did a RAM check. I’ll try that as well.

If our issues are related, note that it was just one audio clip in my Sequence that was causing the entire audio track not to export. So, if that’s meaningful, look in your Timeline for clips that may have third-party effects applied, reverse or speed varied… non-standard or non-native stuff, and then either re-apply or do something, anything different.

I’m assuming you know about the other routine Pr troubleshooting tricks I already mentioned. Deleting prefs has solved 90% of my Pr issues.

I recall a few years ago having a job-stopping issue that was solved by removing all my FilmImpact third party transitions, and re-applying them. Also, copying my whole Sequence and pasting into a new one. Stuff like that.

This is what fixed it for me when I was locked out on El Capitan, and then again after I upgraded to 10.13, and BRU PE stopped authenticating again.

Do this at your own risk. Results not guaranteed. I recommend cloning your disk before messing with sudo commands, just in case:

sudo mkdir /private/etc/sudoers.d

sudo chmod 755 /private/etc/sudoers.d

sudo cp ~/Downloads/BRUExemptions /private/etc/sudoers.d/

sudo -k

sudo bru -h

Neil and Tim, a long overdue thank you for your replies.

I downloaded the demo of NeoFinder. I navigated it to my Catalogs folder, and found the BRU-xxxxxx.gz files inside. If I double-click the .gz, it expands and produces a Unix-executable file that I can open in a number of text apps I can use to copy-paste into Excel.

I don’t get how NeoFinder is needed for this. I can navigate to those Catalog folders in the Finder and find the .gz folders manually.

– Is there something I’m missing about being able to read the contents of the .gz files without expanding them?

– If not, shouldn’t I delete those Unix-executables after I copy what’s in them? I don’t want to mess up BRU PE by diddling with the Catalog contents. I suppose I could option-drag them elsewhere to copy so that I’m not risking messing up my BRU Catalog.

I was hoping for something really simple that would read ALL my catalog data at once, because I’m just a video guy, not an IT expert. I’ve got 115 Catalogs (tapes) in my library. If I have to copy and paste date from 115 catalogs, I just as well should use the Search function in BRU PE to find media assets for me.

I solved it. It was one of two things:

I had reversed a sound effect (Clip>Modify Speed / Duration), and I had also used Zynaptic Unveil VST on my VO, which was recorded in a dojo.

By exporting my reversed effect as AIF and importing it back and replacing in my timeline, and deleting and re-applying Unveil, my exports have audio again.

That’s a good tip, and I left that off my list, because it’s been a routine practice for me since switching to Premiere to trash my renders and caches at any sign of trouble.

I did try that (again, after reading your post) and the missing audio persists.

Pr corrupting its own preferences and caches had been a persistent problem up until the last major build or two. I haven’t noticed it as much in the past year or so.

If you’re on Mac, you should know that besides storing caches in the location you choose in the Preferences, Pr also stores caches in the default location, which on my Mac is in User>Library>Application Support>Adobe>Common>Media Cache. If you don’t know about it, this folder can get large over time. I made an alias of the Common folder on my Desktop. The PTX and Media Cache Files folders can also fill with files. I empty them all between projects, and often during projects, when issues like this manifest.

I also keep an alias to my Pr Prefs on my desktop, and delete those at signs of trouble. After building a clean set of Prefs, I suggest you zip it in the folder it resides, so that you can restore them easily after trashing the prefs you think may have gotten corrupted.
