Just a note further to 60p becoming ‘regular’ speed (24fps)…

On a feature I’m cutting, we’ve shot some stuff at 60p, with a slate, and by running the clip at 250% speed on a 24p timeline, I’m able to have synch dialog AND the option to ramp to slo-mo at any point using the variable speed controls. Works like a charm.

Hello:

A slightly more costly solution, which we’re using on an HVX feature right now — a Smart Slate that has visual timecode readout from the 4-track hard drive recorder. This allows us to have a visual reference when synching the BWAV files from the recorder, so even though it’s a manual synch job, it’s a bit faster than searching the audio file for the clap mark.

We did a synch test for a ten-minute run, and it was rock solid between the camera and recorder.

Thanks for your response. The project is shooting on DVCPRO HD (P2 cards), going through a DI process at Deluxe Labs, before the 35mm filmout. We just completed a camera test, outputting Cineon files for the DI, and screening on film, so the process is working there. As for audio post, I’m synching rushes with the files from the Hard Disk recorder before cutting, and outputting an OMFI for the Sound Designer to work with.

Thanks for your tip regarding reel lengths. I will double-check to make sure there are no issues there.

Thanks for your response. I should have about 100 P2 cards full by the end of the shoot. I’m committed to burning them on DVD (as well as backing up the MXF files to a drive array here at the office) as an alternative to hard drives in my backup strategy.

I know it’s going to take time to do it, but at least it can cook away without me having to watch it all the time. I read that the Pioneer drive says it can burn DL up to 10 X speed, but of course that’s a tower drive — not portable…and that’s also assuming Toast 8 and OSX can work properly with that hardware.

As for an extra set of drives for the client, I’m doing the same thing. Hard drives are turning out to be one of the most cost/time-effective ways of handling lots of data.

Hello all:

Thanks for the great advice. David, I have upped my drive space to 1.5 TB for my working Quicktime files (based on about 50 hours of DVCPRO HD footage), and 1 TB for backup of the MXF files, on another array. Your point about RAM however, is much appreciated.

Hi Barry:

Thanks for your note. I will be backing up on two drives on set. I guess my question was more one for archival purposes. I think I may just put a faster DVD drive in my G5 tower and burn the disks at my office. Then I can give the production a binder full of disks (that have a one-to-one relationship to the original P2 cards) at the end of the shoot, to keep off premises.

Still curious what other workflows folks are using. Anyone else care to chime in?

It definitely is A/C, as Walter suggested. I’m trying to track one down from M-Audio via a local supplier, just to make sure it works.

I would normally consider the AJA box, but I’ve got an opportunity to pick up the Flying Cow (sans power supply) for $20 CDN! Perhaps I could get the info from the folks at M-Audio…

One more question, when it says Output 9 VAC, does that mean the power supply is actually A/C? I would have assumed that most of these supplies are converting A/C to D/C current…

Hi Neil:

I agree that it’s odd there is no easy way to accomplish this in the import dialog. (of course, this ‘fix’ was used with media from FCP 5.1.4, and even though the vrs. 6 Import P2 tool is greatly improved, I don’t believe it has this functionality either…)
