Thanks Shane! Delivering digital file only. Done the conversions in Compressor before – although probably not with your expert settings, but will going forward.

right. good point. actually so far i haven’t come across any h264 footage. seems SOME of that was already transcoded to prores – so it’s more about the mixed formats than about the compressed/non-transcoded formats…ie XDCAM + HDV + PRORES…

Thank you both. Thoroughly appreciate your input.

I just received the footage and there are over 2000 files, NOT labeled/organized by format. In the first of 75 folders I’ve seen 3 files types already.

I did a test with each of those file types and a PRORES final cut sequence and the sequence took all of the files without needing to render.

Since colorist would be going back to the original files anyway, I am wondering if it is crazy to just cut with all these mixed media formats in the same sequence? It will take so much time to transcode every single file. It’s POSSIBLE – I haven’t checked yet – that they are all 29.97.

Thank you. That WAS part of what I was asking…if there was a 1-step process to get pro res files from the sony native files (mp4s) – which I see there isn’t.

I guess the 2nd part to my question was if I really SHOULD/NEEDED to convert those xdcam ex .mov’s TO pro res, or if I should/could just edit with the xdcam’s (compressed codec mpeg2).

at what stage would i convert the sony footage though? from the original camera mp4s? or import them via xdcam transfer and then convert the xdcam ex mp2’s?

also, i thought i read someone saying you can’t transcode xdcam footage?

I also wonder what people’s opinions are in terms of Ghz. How important is it to get 3 Ghz over 2.5, etc…?

You can get a lot more bang for your buck (in my opinion – looking for the same thing right now) – if you look on craigslist or ebay…many 8 core machines, with lots of RAM, and still have applecare so there is some guarantee.
