It was stated it would work with any codec as source. It renders it to the sequence’s settings in the background as soon as you place the file in a sequence. It was intimated that all codecs will be supported.

You have it all right. I’d go to ProRes LT. I’d make it all the same at any rate, then go for it. You have the workflow down OK. Use the standard presets for ProRes but change the frame size. Might test down converting one file of each of the HDV and other 1080 footage to 720. See if it looks acceptable, then you’d not be up converting the 720 to 1080. Try it and post back. Use compressor preset for ProRes LT, but change the frame size to 1280X720 after you add it to your clip. THen copy the setting to the others.
Capture the HDV as ProRes… it will come in at 1080 so still needs scaling down, or the 720 needs scaling up… I’d scale down for a DVD delivery.. it’s SD after all. But I think I’d edit in HD ProRes LT alright.

Post the formats you’ve got to work with… ProRes LT might be just the ticket.

Take a look at the AJA cards. https://www.aja.com (Kona line) The LHi or 3G card would work.

Yes, it’s 29.97 for HD… It can be outputted as 29.97 to a tape with a capture card, or other outputting card/box… or you can add the pulldown to it by exporting it as a file… best done with the card though. THey want tape, right?

If indeed FCP X was really “iMovie Pro”, who cares? What REAL difference does it make?
NLE Software has been inexpensive enough for anybody to buy it for quite some time now. FCS (2009) was being sold for a song IMHO. So’s Avid. $995? My first Avid cost 64k, and did less than iMovie 1.
It comes down to this: Does the tool do it for you or not? No NLE made a better edit decision than the next NLE, right? I don’t care what code was used as long as the tool gets the jobs done I need to get done. Any NLE that works faster is welcome in my book. Video processing time is going to be minimized in this new NLE. Doesn’t matter to me who, how, or where they got the ideas for the software as long as they work, they work.
Leveling the playing field to enter the game already happened I think… FCP X could be a free download and do more than a Flame combined with Smoke and all of AVID thrown in, and this wouldn’t change what’s happened already to the world of professional editing. The tools are accessible to anybody and have been for some time.
I rather like the new interface.
It’s not the tools that give you the status, it’s the resume. Anybody can buy the tools.

Yep. The faster the Mac, the faster the encode to ProRes from the AVCHD files.
FCP X will work with the original files…

You can still copy to a hard drive first (as a backup?), but still need to use log and transfer on those files…
