  • [walter biscardi] “So you say we should expect to run FCP X and FCP 7 simultaneously on the same machine? How inefficient is that? Two software packages to the do same job?

No I said you could go back to FCP 7 when it made sense to do so. I’d only use one at a time most likely.

[walter biscardi] “Gonna take a 12 core Mac 3 days to convert all of that to ProRes when I could just simply start editing with it natively in Premiere or Avid today.”

So what’s stopping you from buying one or the other? They too would run on the same machine as FCP 7 and/or FCP X. At the prices of Avid, Apple, and Adobe NLE software, there’s very little reason not to run them ALL on the same machine, and chose the one for the job at hand to work on. They are just tools after all, why not fill up the toolbox? Expecting Apple’s new NLE to have every single feature that 7 had plus some, is going to bring you disappointment. You’re sounding like the glass is half empty when I see the situation as the glass half full. It looks to me to be a great start.

Randy U and team have been designing NLE software for a very long time with an impressive history. This is just the latest edition. I would assume they know what the pro world needs to be able to do. After all they’ve been addressing it for a very long time. I think Randy wrote Premiere, Key Grip, FCP 1, iMovie versions, and now FCP X. I figure he knows what the market needs, and has planned releases down the line to address features not included in the 1.0 release of FCP X. That’s how it all works right?

FCP X is a 1.0 release alright. Apple had no other choice. In order to tap into the modern technology presented in the Sneak Peek (Grand Central, Open CL, et all) They had no choice but to start over. FCP 7’s code is so out of date, it couldn’t address all the new OS technology that exists today. To have all the features of FCP 7 is not a cut and paste affair. FCP 7’s computer language isn’t the same as FCP X’s, and every bit of the code has to be re written from the ground up.

Doesn’t matter in any event to my business what Apple does. There are alternative apps including FCP 7 that would work for me in the near term, and FCP X will likely fill the bill in the long term. At $995 buying Avid software seems to be a no brainer. Autodesk software really strikes my personal fancy these days. Offline in the NLE du jour, online in Smoke, looks to be a great workflow.

Never the less, I’ll be first in line in June for FCP X’s download.

Isn’t it great we have all these choices?

[Trevor Gilchrist] “IS THERE ANY WAY to tell FCP “No, dude, stop asking for the reference movies and use these (identical format; identical length) movs instead” and so retain the actual edit in the timeline?”

Only thing I can think of is to collapse the mulitclips, then attempt a reconnection to the self contained movies of a duplicate of the original sequence.

There’s little doubt an SSD as a startup disk is the cat’s meow. My new MBP has one and I’ve really seen a difference in the snappiness running apps, but for media storage, they are pricey, and likely not worth the investment at the moment. But as a startup disk? Do it! Boot your Mac in under 10 seconds, launch FCP in 3! Accessing application commands seems really snappy too. But not rendering times.

  • [walter biscardi] “It’s clear from the “sneak peek” that Apple is doing their own thing with very limited input from the outside world.”

What makes you come to that conclusion?

I think breaking the suite apart isn’t such a bad thing… no longer is Apple forced to update EVERY app at the same time. Cocoa code is easier to write and the apps written in it will likely mature faster because of this. 299 for FCP X? It’s about the same price it’s been since the suite was put together if you think about it, and it’s not forcing you to buy Color, STP, DVD SP and Motion at the same time.

Remember the new features of FCS 2009? Most of them were in Motion because I suspect that it was much easier for the team to add features to, it is written in Cocoa, like FCP X is.

It’s not an upgrade at all. It’s a new NLE, which will run side by side with any other NLE including FCP 7… I really think most folks who buy FCP X will run both for a while. I seriously doubt FCP X will have every single feature of FCP 7 in it’s the first release (multicam is likely not there for example) so when you need to go back you can.

Further I also doubt that you’ll be able to open FCP 7 or earlier project files in it. Maybe, but I doubt it.

The keyer in FCP isn’t the best in the suite. I think the keying in Motion is a lot easier to get done. You’ll want to shoot 422HQ if there’s a lot of movement going on, otherwise 422 should be just fine. Having the 10 bit video from the Ki Pro will make it pretty easy to do.

April 18, 2011 at 7:06 pm in reply to: FCP X GPU acceleration?

Well, without actually using FCP X, I think it’s really premature to make any sort of final judgement about whether it’s a pro app or not. Or whether it’s better than or worse than any other app. They hardly scratched the surface with the NAB sneak peek… more unanswered than answered questions I’d say.

But the foundation is very modern/state -of- the-Art… and does take advantage of a lot of OS tech that FCP 7 just couldn’t address at all. Notably it was very snappy on the iMac they were running it from. I think this bodes well for how it would feel on a 12 core machine, right? Will the 1.0 release of it satisfy us all? Probably not, but the future looks very bright to me. The code base will make updating it easier, just as it was for Motion. If you think about it, the most “new” features in Studio 2009 were found in Motion, not FCP 7. REason? Cocoa Code…

All the talk of it being iMovie Pro: how does this matter? From what I saw it’s hardly iMovie. None of my clients care what I edit on, they only care about results. If the app gives me the results I need, it’s going to work for me. If not, then not… Can’t tell until I know a lot more about FCP X than what is public.

The cost of entry into Pro NLE software crashed a decade ago, there’s nothing new in this pricing at all. FCP X for 299 but it doesn’t appear to include DVD SP, STP, Compressor,Color, nor Motion… which if you add it up, the price isn’t any lower than its been since Studio 1. It’s just broken out. Also this means that they can update/grade FCP without having to upgrade Motion and any other apps they have at the same time like they’ve had to do bundling it all in a suite.

Post the properties of the HQ clip, and post the sequence settings… they don’t match somewhere, or you’ve actually transcoded to a format not directly supported or something. You shouldn’t be seeing this if all was done right.
