FCP X is still full of holes, but my next project will be shot file based, and delivery is a set of web streams. I’ll use X for it… it’s customer service online videos… perfect for this software.
Gotta say, as I use it, I’m finding it extremely fast software.

FCP X is the fastest NLE I’ve ever worked with… this alone makes it a very attractive NLE. Apple in no way is really abandoning the “pro” market. They just had to draw a line on features to get a release out. I’ve no doubt that they will add the pro features we need to have.
Gotta look at it from their perspective too. There are 2 million users of FCP 7. Of those I’ll bet fewer than 250k really make their living from it. When you consider that there are 50 million users of iMovie, and that group didn’t really embrace FCE, you can understand who the 1.0 release was aimed at; first. The larger and more profitable stance for Apple to take with this first release is that 50 mil plus group of iMovie users, then the 1.75 million casual users of FCP 7. The 250k users who really do make their living begin to not matter as much to the bottom line… right? They do matter because it’s because these users use FCP that the other 3/4 of the users that use FCP bought it in the first place. It must be “good” or the pro’s wouldn’t use it. Seems to me that it’s in Apple’s stated interest to appease the genuine pros… and I’ve no doubt they are all over doing just that. They’ve said so more than one time in the last few weeks, and I feel I can take them at their word.
That NLE software and decent cameras are inexpensive? That’s been the situation for many years now, and didn’t seem to bring the industry to it’s knees. Rather, it changed it’s MO. Big expensive bays began to disappear… The rates fell, but so did the costs. Actually I don’t think the “people” in post make a whole lot less than they did when edit bays were better than $500 hour to use, it’s just that the likes of Sony, CMX and others took a big hit, and the zillion dollar facilities with many million dollar rooms began a steep decline. Good. No longer it the situation that “he who owns the gear gets the job”. Now it’s more “he whose good gets the job” because anybody with $10,000 can own a decent camera and edit bay. Been that way for at least a decade now.
That said, the future of video communication never looked better IMHO. More people can afford to use the medium than ever before, which results in more business for us all.

Think of the new browser as having the same basic things as FCP 7… i.e., an FCP 7 project has become an Event, and Bins have become keywords… you can have as many or as few keywords as you choose.

A Kernal Panic is a OS crash. Like the blue screen on a PC.
You have some sort of a corruption there, likely on either bad media files or a bad install in general. When was the last time you performed a clean install on your machine? i.e., erase your startup disk and start over on software from scratch?

If you need everything on that drive so you can move the project, simply select everything in the Browser and open the Media Manager. From there select Copy, Uncheck “delete unused media”, create a new project file, and select that FW drive for the copies to go to… viola.

Yes it does… the new machines have integrated (on the logic board) graphics, and a dedicated graphics processors. When needed the dedicated kicks in automatically and improves performance of the Pro Apps.
I have a new 17″ and it’s FASTER than my 3 Gig 8 Core machine. I heartily recommend an SSD startup disk. the 17″ I have will start up in about 6 seconds, launch FCP 7 in about 5… fast.

That’s what I recall too. There were maybe 80,000 Avids in the world in 1999.

I think I’d use favorites as “circle takes” and keywords to replace bins.

From the manual: You can add audio-only transitions to audio edits in a connected storyline. These transitions can be either a fade-in, fade-out, or crossfade.
Note: When a transition is added to a video clip with attached audio, a crossfade transition is automatically applied to the audio. If the audio is detached or expanded from the video, the audio is not affected by the video transition.

Merged clips are clips whose picture is merged with second unit audio recordings… merging them into audio/video clips. Wouldn’t think this is part of the problem, but ya never know… Might try duplicating the sequence, then sending just the video to Color. Upon Return , just copy and paste the entire audio track to the sent from color sequence.
