Use a 720p setting. Shrinking size is always better than enlarging it in the end.

You can open a sequence, and type cmd+ f to find any clips in it which match the name you know, But other than that…

Export the video as a self contained QuickTime movie using current settings. Open that file for your mp4 compression in Compressor. The resulting file will look identical to the exported QT movie… so check that file for the problem. If it’s not there. you’re home free.

Yeah, you need to transcode the camera files before you start editing with them. Use ProRes…

Agree with the other posts, but one thing’s for sure, don’t buy stuff you’ll find in Best Buy etc… they are mostly consumer grade setups, unless they are G-Tech or better. They are slower, and they aren’t tested in any way before they are slapped into those enclosures, which usually include years old chip sets, etc.
I do like those same brands mentioned. I’d not be afraid to buy a Thunderbolt connected multiconnection setup either. Your next Mac will take advantage of the TB connection.

Don’t upgrade the machines above Snow Leopard IMHO… When you reinstalled the OS, was it clean? i.e., start with an EMPTY drive? If not, do that too.
Reseat your Graphics cards… I suspect they are the culprits if you’re seeing flashing weirdness during playback in the Canvas on board the computer. they are used heavily to display video in the interface and external video can even be affected by a bit of dirt in that slot with the graphics card.

How did you transcode the dslr files? using what app, etc…
