January 6, 2013 at 6:38 pm in reply to: FCP 7 on MBP i5 and shared graphics card. can it handle it?That Mac Pro is pretty dated. You’ll find the newer i7 Macbook Pro’s to scream past them in just about every aspect running modern software. Especially if you run FCP X. Just to run it on your Mac Pro would require a graphics card upgrade I’ll bet. MIne is newer and it did.
I have an 8 Core 2,1 Mac Pro. 3 gig machine. My 2 year old laptop (17″ i7) is faster. A LOT faster… I’d seriously look for a 17″ because it’s more expandable than the 15’s, (has Thunderbolt and a PCI card slot)… that’s a very sweet setup, and would serve you well for editing for sure.

Gotta say, the days of having to conform a setting to source footage then making a huge mistake in the process are indeed fading though. FCP X, Avid, and Adobe are all working at this problem, and at least trying to make it less common.

January 6, 2013 at 6:26 pm in reply to: Subtitle project: FCP X interchange with Vegas 11Your idea of sending them a low res file is good, but there’s no way for them to export a file to you other than to export a QT movie which you’ll have to conform.
I’d send them a window burn for sure.. then you’ll at least have those numbers.
They can export XML files for you, but they won’t contain the subtitles. BUt they would contain the timecode if you match your source’s TC and reel to the file you send them etc…
Probably just as easy to conform from a QT movie they create and send back if they’re using FCP X or iMovie.

Sasha is right on.
I would definitely call them and ask which NLE, and what duties you’ll be expected to perform.
But beyond that, get to know their systems and workflows to understand the whys of the way they do things. It will help you with those duties…

Sort of sounds like that last save you did with the project file a while ago simply went bad, or was written over a sector on the drive that was dodgy… There are drive utilities that might be useful, but it could be a one time thing too…
Just back up those project files daily OFF the computer. A cloud account works great for this.

Here’s what Apple says about that error code:
Type -36 error (I/O Errors (bummers)
This file is having difficulty while either reading from the drive or writing to the drive. The file
may have been improperly written data to the drive or the hard drive or disk may be damaged.
This is almost always indicative of a media error (hard error on the disk). Sometimes (rarely) it is transient.WELL then, let’s check the file. Send me a compressed version of your FCP file. If I can open it, Then you have a hardware problem… ucky.
