  • The answer isn’t that easy. You definitely will become frustrated with a very minimal setup, and you can also spend more than needed.

What format do you intend to edit, and do you have some sort of budget? There’s also more to a setup than just a computer. You need scratch disks, and they should be fast enough for the format you intend etc… plus external video if you intend to properly color correct or TV consumption etc.

    Trash your preferences for FCP.

And Just why would he want this? There’s no more color information in HQ than there is in LT.. it’s all 4:2:2 10 bit color… If you’re material doesn’t have a bunch of fast movement in it. I’d tell your colorist to work with the LT footage. It is broadcast quality. It has a lower data rate than HQ, but rarely looks a lot differently in the end as long as it doesn’t have a lot of fast movement in the shots themselves.. ala sports footage maybe…

That said, what was the original footage format, and how did you import the footage into FCP? Via the log and transfer window? Or did you transcode to ProRes another way first? If so how? Do the clip names and reel numbers match the card numbers and clip names on your disk images?

Don’t know why mounting more than one crashes FCP. I don’t think it should actually.

  • Nothing to do other than what’s suggested.

If you do as suggested by David, you’ll end up getting an export that doesn’t behave like you’re seeing. You won’t be back where you are now.

BTW. No NLE edits h.264 files natively AFAIK. FCP X would have not required you to manually transcode. It does it automatically…

  • Well that’s the problem… the t3i shoots H.264 video files, and those aren’t supported in FCP 7 (and not actually in X either – just seems like it). Thus your uglies…

You need to transcode the footage from those cameras to ProRes before you edit them. Now you need to transcode the shots you used to Pro Res, edit them in a ProRes sequence, and you’ll not see the problem when you export.

You need to perform a clean install if you want the software to run properly. Meaning back up your data and erase your startup disk and start over from the OS up. Not pretty, but by far the best way to start a new editing setup. You can even use a different drive to do this with, and start up from that drive when you want to edit.

February 17, 2012 at 2:24 am in reply to: Settings for editing Multimedia piece in FCP7?

I’d work in ProRes 4:2:2 1080p, and if you intend to move a lot on stills, set the frame rate to 30 (or 29.97). If you are going to add video files to the sequence, post what format these are.

Then use tiffs or PNG as a file format for your raw photos, cleaning them up in photo software and exporting them not much larger than about 2500 pixels in either direction. Set the DPI to 72. You should have an easy time of moving around on these images in FCP. This should end up looking pretty nice in a web stream.

Studio 2 has FCP 6 included with it. So you don’t need to install FCP 4.5 to install studio 2 even if it is an upgrade. You just need both serial numbers. one for the earlier version your upgrading from, and one that came with your new studio 2 software.

But you should perform a clean install. ie. erase your startup disk with your OS disk. Then update that OS all the way before you install the studio from it’s discs. Then upgrade studio last. Save what you need first somewhere else first of course as you will erase your startup disk doing this. You can even use a new drive for it, or clone your current one first to another to back it up.
