Final Cut Pro export: white sections, freezing, pixelated, etc.
I am exporting a series of videos for a client. I shot a sweet 16 birthday for them, and I have several videos. A few are shorts, some are longer (20 minutes or so). I had 3 cameras and I cut between them. Throughout, the videos will cut to white sections, freeze on a frame for long periods, pixelate out after freezing, etc. The audio remains intact. Here is one of the videos.

In this instance, at the end of the video, I faded out to black, and that’s where the issue starts in the export. In other videos, it seems to be without reason, but in all of them, if I change the opacity to fade in/out of a clip, either to another clip or to black, it does this.
What is the issue?

What format did you shoot, and what are your sequence’s settings?

I had three camera; two T3is shooting 1920×1080 24p, and the backup camera was an HVX200 shooting 720 30p. Yes, I did mix frame rates in a few videos, but that doesn’t seem to be the issue, as all of the videos, even the ones where the HVX footage was never used, have these issues. The sequence settings are for the T3i footage.
You can see here where the issue comes up in this video, which is only T3i footage. At very end of the video, I faded the opacity down to black; that’s where you can see the issue. In other videos, it happens during places without any filters, transitions, or other alterations to the footage. However, it does seem to happen every time there’s an opacity change, as well.

Well that’s the problem… the t3i shoots H.264 video files, and those aren’t supported in FCP 7 (and not actually in X either – just seems like it). Thus your uglies…
You need to transcode the footage from those cameras to ProRes before you edit them. Now you need to transcode the shots you used to Pro Res, edit them in a ProRes sequence, and you’ll not see the problem when you export.

I know several people who shoot with T3is and don’t have this issue?
What do I do now that I’ve edited everything?

You’d better ask those people what they’re doing, because no one here on the Cow can edit h.264 files without issues. Jerry told you right.

You could try to transcode to files that match your other cameras and relink to the new files, but as they say, your mileage may vary. You may have to eyeball match if relinking isn’t frame accurate.

Could I re-export all of the cuts as individual clips, transcode all of the new individual clips it makes, and then re-import them into FCP and lay them back out again?
I called around. Everyone I know who works with a DSLR now switched to Adobe. Coincidentally, none of them know what “transcoding” is.

Yes, that’s one way of doing it. If you are cutting in a DVCPro sequence, keep in mind that exporting those clips as self contained files will mean that they are already going to be DVCPro, because they will match the codec of the timeline. The problem is, you may encounter the exact issue you had before when trying to export.

I appreciate your input… but I kind of am missing the point of what you’re saying. It seems that doing something that arduous but winding up where I am right now would be… pointless.
In essence, without re-editing this entire project, how can I fix this issue?

You must first try the techniques I’ve already mentioned. Transcode and try to relink first. Then try eyeball matching if relinking won’t work. That’s what I’d do…

Thanks for the info. I guess I won’t know if it “works” until after I export; I had no trouble editing this content.
How do I transcode? Obviously, by my dumbfounded responses, I’ve never done it.
I’m not sure what you mean by eyeball matching, or the issue that’d necessitate it. Sorry for seeming so daft.
