It worked, thanks. FWIW I discovered you didn’t have to have Machina running in the background. If you run Machina and use it like a “settings dashboard” for the Xena card, you can tweak the settings to what you want, close Machina then open PPro and the card keeps those settings. At any time while editing if you want to change the settings, fire up Machina, make the changes, then close it.
If I create an Adobe HD-SDI project and import my HDV project, I can set the output device to the Xena and play the timeline through the Xena. It doesn’t playback as well as just native HDV using the native Adobe HDV preset (and definitely not as well as the Adobe HDV preset), but it is good enough until Aja implements a feature/fix to the Multi-Cam issue. More importantly the Multi-Cam window works just as well as a native HDV project.
I also discovered that the Machina 1920×1080 29.97p setting played back the best even though my footage is interlaced HDV.
I’ll have to do some more testing to see if I can re-import any changes I make in the Adobe HD-SDI preset into the Aja HDV Preset.

December 16, 2006 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Is there another way to output timeline through Xena other than the Aja preset?I just finished setting up a 1.5 terabyte 4 disk RAID 5 array in anticipation of the larger file sizes 🙂
Have you found the “sweet spot” of balance between quality and performance when it comes to which media file format/codec to use when you ingest HDV through the HD Connect LE and edit with the Xena?

I capture native HDV through the firewire and if Multi-Cam worked, I’d use the Aja HDV preset. It is 1080i footage captured through my Sony M10U deck, so I use the Adobe preset.
Next month, I’m getting an HD-Connect LE, so I’ll try capturing other formats via the SDI connection then.
I’m connecting the HD monitor through the Xena LH’s component video cables, so I’m not sure if the Machina “hot-wiring” trick will work, but it will be the first thing I try tonight when I get in-front of my Premiere Pro machine! Thanks for the tip. My fingers are crossed…

Every major project I do is a multi-cam project. After completing a couple “non-multi-cam test projects”, I was in love with my Xena card. Now I just started my first “real” project which is multi-cam and now I want my money back.
If the Xena card really does support multi-cam, please explain the workflow in detail describing how I can complete a multi-cam project with a Xena card? From what I can see the Xena is totally worthless if you are working on a multi-cam project.

I’ll try Particular out if I get stuck with particleIllusion, but so far I’m happy with it and able to get the job done.

December 4, 2006 at 4:04 pm in reply to: AE Plugin ! is ti impossible ? or need alt of time ?I am so glad you guys are working on an AE plug-in!
I am a brand new particleIllusion user who sat down this weekend to use it for the first time in a project after working through the tutorials and had a heck of a time working with AE + particleIllusion. In fact I came here to look for tips/suggestions and saw this thread. (The tutorial on Wondertouch’s site for AE + particleIllusion doesn’t work with AE 7, at least it breaks at the beginning when you try to cut-and-paste the position information from AE to PI.)
I had originally ordered Trapcode because I wanted an AE plug-in. I did this at the same time Red Giant was taking over the ordering for Trapcode and my order fell through the cracks, so I bought particleIllusion instead. I use other software than AE, so figured it might be nice to have the stand-alone app. By the end of the day yesterday, I was regretting not having a solution that was a plug-in for AE 🙁
A particleIllusion AE plug-in will be great.

cybele,
I love ProTools and used it extensively, but I find myself using Audition with Premiere Pro instead. The integration between the two programs, if you have Dynamic Link, is far better than the import/export “dance” you will have to go through with ProTools and Premiere Pro.
I didn’t feel like I had much of a learning curve either. If you know how to use ProTools, Audition should be fairly easy to pick up and start using. ProTools is still my favorite DAW, but I just haven’t found a reason for me to use it instead of Audition when it comes to my Premiere Pro projects.
