O & O Defrag is a good one to look at – can’t recall andyone the free tools being any good. Maybe they do exist but just haven’t found one yet.

I will in the meantime start rendering to the C drive..

Be sure to defragment both your drives on a regular basis which also speeds up the process (especially your C drive since this is also your boot drive).
Start|Programs|Accessories|System Tools|Disk Defragmenter

One of the nice and easy things to accomplish in Vegas.

Click the event and hold the left mouse button down while moving the clip to any track. If the no new track exists below the one that you are moving from, Vegas will automatically create one for you – audio or video

For multiple events, click on each event while holding down the [CTRL] key.

First thing to do is to get the latest patches and install them although your problem sounds like it lies elsewhere.

What are your machine specs – this will help a lot in analysing where your problem is.

Just remember that using different apps will mean a different workflow for each app. True realtime rendering is a problem on any app.

Computer cpu speed is directly linked to rendering speed.

One thing you can do which will speed up rendering is to make sure you don’t render to the same physical hard drive as the source footage.
