I got it to work if I exported using Quicktime conversion and instead of using the custom option and typing in 720×486 myself, i used their preset of 720×486 4:3 and it didnt stretch it…I’m coming to the conclusion that its b/c 720×486 isnt really 4:3. but if someone who understands this all could explain it to me so it makes sense, please do!
And if they could tell me how I can export it in Compressor so I dont have to use quicktime conversion everytime…thanks!

I’m still having the problem…I read somewhere that 720×486 will view as 640×480…is that my problem? That it views as 640×480 in fcp but when i export and play it in quicktime its playing it as 720×486(which is what i want) and thats why it looks stretched cuz in fcp i’m only seeing it as 640×486?
Can someone help me? Aspect ratios make my head hurt and I can’t figure this out…

Thats what I thought too, but no, its not checked….

ok, I’m not sure if they’re going to publish my last post cuz I was kind of rude in it. So I’m replying again by saying that I don’t appreciate your response at all, I don’t know why you would even post it seeing how the idea of this forum is to help people, not judge them and put them down. You don’t know my client, what my project is or what I’m even doing, so please dont judge me or other ppl.
I’m used to using Avid and having a tape deck and I’m new to HD. I know putting HD on a dv will lose quality, I just wasnt sure if the HDV part of my equation makes a difference.
I know how easy it is to output to a camera, i was just reading about assemble and insert editing using editing to tape in the manual and didnt understand what that all was about and if I had to even deal with that option.
I would appreciate some advice from a video professional please. Instead of someone judging my editing abilities (i never said I was a pro, geez…). Thank-you.

Yep, already did it, FCP still wont read it as HDV. Its really frustrating me now, I just dont get it.

ok, so I played around some more and shot some more footage making sure that my camera was set to HDV for recording and also set to HDV in the menu for the VCR on the camera. When connecting to my computer, I made sure that the Rec in/out was set to HDV and I also made sure that the ilink connectivity setting on the camera was set to off so it wouldnt convert the footage to DV, but FCP said:
“Device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup correctly. You may still log offline clips.
This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.”
I’ve read the camera manual over and over, I’m sure I have it all set right.
I set my FCP settings to capture preset: HDV and for Device control I’ve switched it on and off with HDV firewire, HDV firewire basic and Sony HDV device and it never works.
Like i said b4, it will still capture if I set FCP to DV settings or to HDV apple intermediate codec, just not when set to HDV.
I dont get it.

I made sure to switch it from auto to HDV on my camera b/c I was thinking the same thing, but FCP still wouldnt read it. I’ll try playing around with it more and see what happens.
Here’s another random question that you might be able to help me with too…I’m collecting HD footage from clients for a project, but I only have my HDV camera and my computer to view the footage with. Once again I’m using FCP to edit it. Besides the clients sending me an external harddrive with the footage on it, would they be able to put the footage on a DV tape that I can use my HDV camera to capture it into FCP? Whats the best format for them to send me if I need the HD quality and I only have my camera and computer to read it. Random question, i know, just curious to what other ppl think.
Thanks.

Help! I’m having the same problem with FCP not reading my HDV device, but only I’m not using a deck, I’m using my Sony HDR-FX7 to capture the footage. I’ve got it to where it’ll capture the footage if I set the capture preset to HDV-apple intermediate codec, but I dont want to use that setting b/c I know that it will create larger files. It also captures the footage if I set it to DV-NTSC, but I know for a fact it was shot with the HDV setting and not DV.
Some help please! Thanks!

I guess it’s not our server that can’t handle it, but that we don’t have a larger enough bandwidth, we only have a T1…
That video helped, but as soon as he was going to show what settings to use to compress your video, the video ended. Can anyone help me figure out how I should compress my video for the internet? Like i said before, it was shot on a canon HDV 1080i with 16:9 aspect ratio and edited in PP 2.0.
I’m don’t know much about uploading videos online or about video compression, so i appreciate all the help i can get.
Thanks,

Thank-you, that cleared up a lot actually. I’ve been working on an avid for a couple years now(on a different computer) and I had never seen these jagged edges before, and I had never heard of interlacing stuff, so I was afraid that I just didnt know how to work PP2, I’m glad to know thats not my problem!
I’m not sure if you could help me with this too, but when burning to a dvd, does PP2 compress your footage? I burned what I had on to DVD to see what it would look like without the jagged edges and I noticed that the resolution wasn’t the best. I’m recording on an HDV camera, shouldn’t I have great quaility vodeos on a normal(not LCD or plasa) tv?
