We tried to be as objective as possible. We compared the Resolve conversions from HD to SD and SD to HD with hardware conversions of the same material. By hardware I mean both up and down converts using the built in convertors of Sony VTRs. We used the hardware conversions of the AJA Kona 3 cards and we used the Snell & Wilcox Alchemist. All files were imported into several NLEs to see how they were interpreted.

We liked the “look” of the Resolve conversions well enough. It was the purely technical issues we found unacceptable. Pixel aspect ratio was wrong in both directions. Plus – and as this was awhile ago so I may be wrong on this – I believe we found that field order was not being dealt with correctly in the conversions.

We reported these issues to Blackmagic. I have not retested with v11 of Resolve. Just have not had the time.

I realize this is an old thread. I have tested this workflow and seem to find that Resolve does NOT handle pixel aspect ration conversion correctly going from SD to HD or HD to SD. It seems to in the timeline but renders are incorrect when taken to a different tool.

I would test this carefully before committing to Resolve for any conversions between differing PAR.

December 29, 2014 at 1:08 am in reply to: Using Davini to convert 23.976 to 29.97 fps

Glenn is right. Avid will do a perfect job of adding 2:3 pulldown to 23.976 in a 29.97 sequence IF the source material is properly flagged as progressive.

This needs to be done with each clip that is 23.976 and can be done to a group of clip in a bin by selecting the correct column (field motion?) and applying.

    Good luck,

Ahh, makes sense. Where would I find that test file if I wished to use that method?

Ok, figured out the “right click on color page thumbnail” instruction. That seems to work.

So maybe I am seeing a bug? Or is the tool in the configuration section for something else?

    Thanks,

Specifically under project settings and on the Lookup Table page at the Generate LUT from Current Grade section I devised a name in the Save LUT as entry space and then pressed the Generate LUT button.

I then reset my only node, chose 3D LUT and selected the newly generated LUT. The result is highly distorted.

In fact, I can not find a right click on the color page thumbnail at all. Not sure I really understand that suggestion now.

    Thanks,

No. Using the dialog in the configuration page.

    Will try a right click.

    Thanks,

Primary only. Just a simple test. Lift down, gain up.

May 28, 2014 at 2:59 pm in reply to: Cutting from select sequences… how?

So, this thread is well over a year old. I am looking at this issue in the current version of Premiere and while a bit better, it is still not ideal as far as I can tell.

Yes, you can put a sequence in the source window and edit with it, retaining true source clip info once material is cut into the new sequence (no nesting). But there seems to be no way to visually see that source sequence while viewing / working on the source side.

Am I missing something here or is that the current state?

    Thanks,
