You’re a wise man…thank you for your insight. Whenever I ship from UPS, I use their boxes and use lots of foam and bubble wrap. I got good at packing just what I will need. The only issue I ever had was that the girl who taped the boxes for the shipment home, didn’t do a good job and two pieces fell out during shipping: A $250 camera plate and something else for $50. I did look into rental facilities, but in the past I have been disappointed with the equipment as that gets mistreated as well. Funny about the pot smoking teenagers, it is a pretty awful job though. I need to take a camera and a laptop on the plane with me and I guess I’ll check my suitcase and ship all the metal gear and cables. Thanks again.

Thank you Randy, While I have sent equipment such as: Stands, Lights packed well, Cables and even my Monitor…I have never shipped my camera and I agree with you, I never should. If you think about it though, that’s how the equipment gets from the manufacturer to the stores and if you do mail order, to the consumer. True, a few hundred is nothing…however these are pickup shots and I offered to foot the bill for the airfare and they’ll pay for shipping the equipment. That’s one of the problems shooting out of state…if you need additional shots. I’ll check out Porta Brace. Actually the MRP is $450.

Hi Mark, I did see that bag on the porta brace site when I was looking for a bag a few months ago. Since I just bought a Sony Bag for $300, I’d rather not buy another one…but since this seems to come up a lot, I’ll look into it. So you think shipping via UPS/Fedex isn’t the way to go? Thanks…as always.

Steven, I copied your post and added a new topic on the Matrox forums, as I never heard of having to stripe the tape before exporting. One user brought up this good point:
A nuance here…
Striping a tape (as I have heard it) typically refers to writing the whole tape with continuous timecode (and control track) so that one can go back and do insert edits after the fact.
Laying down timecode for a assemble edit (like print to tape) is not usually referred to as striping….though technically similar….you usually require 5-20 seconds to get started depending on your decks pre-proll needs…
I’d point this out to Steve..as it might deter some potential customers inadvertantly…

Thank you Mark…you always come through with great info. I will look into the software you mentioned and also play with the speed controls in PPRO. I guess for something critical, I will drag out the laptop and use On Location. Thanks again.

Steve, I have only used the EZ jib with larger broadcast type of cameras, not the handheld. I do they just came out with a riser to facilitate working with the handheld type. I had an issue where my battery was hitting the jib in certain positions and they were going to design a piece of equipment just for me to help me out….that kind of service is unheard of.

Rennie, that is an excellent idea…I’d keep my digital camera on a tripod and use a remote to trigger it. I asked one of the two possible clients if I could shoot the PP on a different day and have them go through a mock presentation and they said yes. Sure it’s more time for me, but the end result will be more controlled.

Hi, Just wanted to give an update on how this all worked out. I updated my written proposal to say “plus travel expenses, estimated to be $900-$1,1100”. I gave my presentation yesterday, the doctors loved it, asked how much, I gave them the proposal, he signed it with no questions asked. I then asked the Administrator (who really wanted me to book the job) if they are OK with the travel and she replied “he signed it, all you have to worry about”.
Nice to have people on your side, the Panera Muffin Tops didn’t hurt. So thank you to all who gave me the confidence to pass these charges along to the client…where they should be.
