I finished my testing of the Matrox RT.X2. The review is online:

You might find the review interesting, you might not. The best thing I can say is that the hardware and software performed flawlessly, as designed.

The worst I can say is that you might still decide to avoid it for various reasons.

I liked it. If I didn’t already have Cineform and a graphics card with Component outputs, I might be inclined to buy one of the new RT.X2LE cards. It is certainly better than editing HDV natively.

The reason Matrox wanted me to test it was so I would stop saying bad things about it. They achieved their goal. The system I tested was rock solid.

The review is not as complete as it could have been, as it refers to other more complete reviews, so I didn’t submit it for the Cow. I just stuck it on my site.

Steven, I copied your post and added a new topic on the Matrox forums, as I never heard of having to stripe the tape before exporting. One user brought up this good point:

    A nuance here…

Striping a tape (as I have heard it) typically refers to writing the whole tape with continuous timecode (and control track) so that one can go back and do insert edits after the fact.

Laying down timecode for a assemble edit (like print to tape) is not usually referred to as striping….though technically similar….you usually require 5-20 seconds to get started depending on your decks pre-proll needs…

I’d point this out to Steve..as it might deter some potential customers inadvertantly…
