Hi Jon,

Here’s the issue with using a 24p sequence, which means your final output will be 24p – 24p is not going to be very smooth with fast action, fast camera movements/pans, etc., will all be jerky in “realtime” playback. I’d not recommend 24p for a sports video.

Why not use a 30p sequence, which will still get you perfect 50% slow motion, and at the same time the realtime 30p video playback will be somewhat smoother than 24p. It’s a compromise.

When you drop 60p video into a 30p sequence, Premiere quite simply just plays every other frame. With 24p, it’s a little more complicated since the math doesn’t come out evenly, so extra frames get dropped in a certain rhythm or cadence.

Want to determine if something is wrong with old project, or if there’s some overall issue with using CS6 on the new Windows 10 machine in general.

Perhaps the previous Premiere installation was not up to date, and therefore the prior project does need updating to the “new” software?

In any case, let Premiere update the project – it doesn’t hurt the original, just makes a copy. Then do SAVE AS to save the new version.

You lost me a little with the pre-render/re-render stuff. But anyway, no sense using Uncompressed export (giant files!) when starting with heavily compressed AVCHD footage. Rather, install and use a good quality “intermediate” codec such as Lagarith or UT (free downloads) or Cineform or any number of other good 4:2:2 codecs.

Also, make sure not to render timeline to green and then “Use Previews” in export, that may be using a low quality render preview in the process, degrading the final output. Just apply Neat to clip in timeline and Export.

You shouldn’t have to apply Neat Video twice, perhaps an export setting is off a bit and you’re not getting the best possible results? Please post screen grab of export settings if you can. Probably don’t need “Max Depth” applied using 8-bit source material either.

Hi Jim,

You don’t really want “uncompressed video”, what you are looking for is to minimize compression loss.

True uncompressed HD video would take like several GBs per minute, files are absolutely huge. And to no benefit – you said you pulled the original clips from online sources, meaning they are already heavily compressed most likely. Making the files larger cannot make them better than they are. At best, you can maintain what quality you have.

So let’s start at the beginning – do you know the formats/resolution of the source media?

Sequence Settings?

Export Settings?

How do you want to view or distribute the end results?

Please share as much info as possible, screen shots are very helpful, then we can figure out the best workflow to get you a decent quality export.

It is important to transfer ALL files, keeping the folder structure intact. We first discovered this years ago with XDCAM having erratic playback, crashing, etc. when using basic File > Import methods.

Once we switched to copying all files and using Media Browser, problems went away. Don’t tempt fate.

The Media Browser also imports spanned clips as a single clip. Doesn’t physically alter them, but just “understands” them correctly on import.

Clean out the Premiere cache.

Make sure Destination drive has adequate space available.

Make sure export filename path is not extra long.

Make sure filename does not contain “special characters” reserved for system use, like punctuation and such. Keep it simple.

I would make appropriate changes if applicable and try a short export segment before committing to the long render of full movie again.

Not sure why you would need two timelines – the export format is determined when you export, not when setting up a Sequence.

Also, there is no need to render the timeline itself usually, unless the effects are so heavy that you can’t get smooth playback for a segment you wish to review/check results of. You can leave parts of the timeline red or yellow and when you export, the source video is rendered direct to the output format.

When you render previews, and also check the “Use Previews” button in Export settings, you are adding a generation of compression since you are taking the rendered preview clips (temp clips) and compressing them yet again.

Hi Sarah,

Just downloaded and installed Lagarith in this machine, took 5 seconds total. Use the first option that says “Installer”.

Opened up Premiere and there it was! In Export settings, choose Format = AVI. For the Preset below, it will say “DV NTSC” or something, just leave that. Then go down to VIDEO tab and hit the drop down arrow for CODEC and choose Lagarith there.

You WILL need to change Frame Size, Frame Rate, Field Order, and Pixel Aspect to match your source video (same as source Sequence Settings). You can look at Source and Output to make sure it all matches (circled on image). After changing settings, Preset name will change to “Custom”.

Once all set up correctly, SAVE the Preset for next time, then just choose AVI and Your Preset, and Export.
