Importing XDCAM footage into CS6
Posted by Mike Albertini on November 15, 2012 at 10:27 amHi,
I’ve googled this relentlessly and read various posts about it on creative cow but still couldn’t find an answer which worked for me.
The file structure of the EX1 folders is BPAV>CLPR/TAKR and when I try to import them into Premiere CS6.0.0 I get the message ‘the file has no audio or video streams’.
I thought there might then be something wrong with the file structure or perhaps a problem due to the fact the guy who gave them to me works on a PC whereas I’m on a Mac.
I then however tried importing these same files into FCP7 using log and transfer and they import fine.
I’ve therefore imported into Premiere the files I got from FCP7 instead of the originals and worked with them instead.
Not an ideal solution so was wondering how I resolve this problem so I can have a more streamlined Premiere workflow.
Thanks,
Mike

November 15, 2012 at 3:23 pmHi Mike,
When working with camera media, the best process is to COPY the top folder from memory card directly to your hard drive. Do not dig down and try to copy just video files, and do not use any Sony transfer software. Reason being that some formats have the audio and video separate, and there is MXF data and such interspersed throughout all the folders, and if Adobe doesn’t have access to ALL the original info, that is where problems come from.
So copy the whole works over to hard drive “as is”, then the next important step in Premiere is to use the MEDIA BROWSER to import the clips, rather than just “Import”. Media Browser will dig down and pull up the video clips for you, in the proper context, so that they work
Thanks

November 15, 2012 at 4:33 pmHi Jeff,
Thanks for your reply. I don’t have access to the camera or the memory card. I have been given an external hard-drive with folders on it which has all of the content in them.
I WAS importing through the media browser from the top most folder and still getting the message ‘the file has no audio or video streams’.
I’m pretty sure there’s nothing wrong with the file structure I was given because FCP7 could import it though Log & Transfer.
Bearing all that in mind is there anything else which you think could be the issue?…This is the first project for which I’ve used CS6 so it could be some of my settings aren’t quite right…
Saying that, this project has also included Canon 7D and Canon 5D footage and that imported ok.
Any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks
Mike

Possibly an Adobe bug, so be sure you have the latest update patches installed for Premiere. Beyond that, PC guy here and don’t have any other brainstorms, sorry
Thanks

November 15, 2012 at 5:32 pmHi Jeff,
I just updated to CS6.0.2 and now instead of getting the message ‘the file has no audio or video streams’ when I try to import it from the media browser I get the message ‘unsupported format or damaged file’.
But FCP7 imported them ok so they’re not damaged and CS6 supports these files…
So still not sure what’s wrong…
Thanks for the help,
Mike

November 15, 2012 at 10:40 pmLike you’ve done, use the files FCP created to get thru the job. Then R&D why this is happening with APP when you can.

January 30, 2013 at 5:32 pmSame here. My solution was to re-wrap to .mov using XDCAM Transfer. Bit of a pain, but at least technically speaking it’s still native.

June 27, 2013 at 6:09 amHI, I just renamed my .MOV to .MP4 and it worked like a charm.
Please try that and let me know what happens.
Best,
Lee.

January 16, 2016 at 9:01 pmHi, just catching up with this thread as I’ve just started using a Sony pmw300. I’m on prem pro cs5 and I simply transferred the clips and all other files from sxs cards via USB to my hard drive then used media browser in prem to import to the project – it all works perfectly with no errors so far, but I’m wondering if I need to transfer the other associated files with the video clip? Does it make a difference or does pp reference them somehow in the project?
Anyway just thought I’d mention that it’s trouble free at the moment tho this is my first project with this media!
System: Windows 7 64bit premiere pro cs5.03, matrox rt.x2: importing 4:2:0 xdcam HQ 1920 X 1080 footage.

January 19, 2016 at 4:21 pmIt is important to transfer ALL files, keeping the folder structure intact. We first discovered this years ago with XDCAM having erratic playback, crashing, etc. when using basic File > Import methods.
Once we switched to copying all files and using Media Browser, problems went away. Don’t tempt fate.
The Media Browser also imports spanned clips as a single clip. Doesn’t physically alter them, but just “understands” them correctly on import.
Thanks
