Hi Sergio,
ATI and nVidia license out there graphics chips to other vendors like PowerColor and PNY who offer similar-named products. These cards use the actual drivers from ATI or nVidia so they are virtually the same for the most part, so if Matrox approved a “9600 card with 512mb” it *should* be OK regardless of vendor, but I cannot gaurantee that

Do you require combined audio/video for a reason? DVD authoring software like Encore will typically work better given the separate .m2v and .wav files.
If you output an .mpg file, the audio had now been compressed using MPEG audio compression, and it has ben mixed (MultiPlexed) with the video stream.
In order for Encore to convert audio to Dolby AC3, the AV signal must be DeMultiPlexed (DeMuxed), then the already compressed audio recompressed to Dolby, and the video rewritten without the audio. More render time, more quality loss.
By supplying an uncompressed .wav file to Encore, it can directly and quickly convert that to Dolby and without touching the video at all.
If for some reason to do need to simply output an MPEG-2 file as .mpg, then under the Audio tab in the Adobe Encoder, simply check the box for “Multiplexed”.

Hi Sergio,
Because the graphics card is responsible for about half of the Matrox realtime effects filters, it is important to have one that works well with Matrox. I don’t know if yours would cause any issues or not, as it is not tested

I have been delivering 2+ hour weddings, dance recitals and stage events on DVD since 2000 and have never had a quality complaint using the 4500 CBR encoding (or less even).
2-DVD sets equal double the setup, rendering, duplication, materials and is also an inconvenience to the customer to have to change discs to see the whole program.
I’m not saying NEVER do 2 discs, can be OK for a wedding with a couple copies, but for recitals or other high-volume jobs, seldom worth it. I just sent out a 135-minute recital on one DVD and this is common for me, parents love them, never a complaint about quality or content.
While the suggestion of putting the video into a DV widescreen project will work, it could literally take days to render a 2-hour video, it is incredibly slow that way.
Back to your question about encoding settings, the 1440×1080 settings are for Blu-ray. In the Encoder, you will want to choose “MPEG-2 for DVD” and choose an NTSC preset and be sure to check the “16:9” box for widescreen, and then you can alter the encoding rate to 4500 CBR.
Perhaps if you check the “Deinterlace” button in the encoder this will get rid of the nasty flickers that happen when encoding HDV to DVD, try a short sample perhaps. This would result in a “progressive scan” look to the video.
There is another option that might possibly work for you, IF you have access to the HDV camcorder. Break the completed timeline into two one-hour segments and export each to HDV tape.
Then set the camera to downconvert and capture the footage into a DV widescreen project. This way, the camera is doing the HD > SD conversion. Put the captured clips together on one timeline, THEN export to DVD, 4500CBR widescreen.
I wish I had better news for you, we are all struggling with HD workflows though.

Hi Philip,
Encoding H.264 takes about 5x longer than encoding MPEG-2 for Blu-ray, and if using 2-Pass then double that again!
At low data rate settings, H.264 will provide a better quality than MPEG-2, BUT – at higher quality settings that advantage is mostly lost as MPEG-2 can provide a beautiful image at high data rates.
As long as you have room on the disc, you can crank up the data rate and just use MPEG-2 for Blu-ray and you’ll find it looks quite nice. Try a setting of CBR in the 25-30 range. Of course, if you can let the system run overnight then H.264 is an option.

It is a “feature” of CS3 that when capturing HDV, you will have NO preview, and also NO scene detect, this is normal.
I use the Matrox RT.X2 hardware with PPro CS3, and this provides video in the capture window, as well as full HD output via analog component and DVI, so I can monitor 1080i externally while capturing. Also adds scene detect and audio level meters to capture window.
RT.X2 also provides true realtime, no render editing, I can’t imagine editing HDV without it. Real productivity booster

I have the DG33FB board in my own RT.X2 system, and it is Matrox-approved, not sure what difference there may be with the “DG33TL model, but should work. Matrox install recipe here:

The RT.X2 can use the 1x slot so your video card position is OK, but make sure video card is Matrox approved, as many RT effects are done through the graphics card. Check list here:

Yes, the RT.X2 LE should be of a similar design as the SD model. It is a 3/4 length design.
Note that Safe Harbor includes a free RT.X2 tutorial CD with RT.X2 purchases, which can also be had separately

Hi Kandahar,
It will not be worth the effort and TIME to try and accomplish this. Make a nice DVD and play using an “upconverting” DVD player, this will enhance quality for the HD display without you having to jump through hoops.
To Export to HDV tape, you must be working in an HDV project. ALL of your DV material would have to be set to “Scale to Frame Size” and would then require rendering. 4:3 SD video would be pillar boxed with black bars left and right. After rendering timeline, Export to HDV requires another lengthy render prior to writing to tape. So now you have an HDV tape, this requires you to play back from camcorder every time. Not fun or practical.
