  • Rendering to Bluray in Media Encoder

    Greetings:
I just did my first rendering to Bluray using the Media Encoder and found it amazingly slow compared to what it takes for a SD DVD to render. I used the Bluray H264, CBR, 20. It took about 15-20 minutes to render a two minute clip. Is this normal? Also, what is the highest recomended setting when space is not an issue?
    Thank you very much…
    Philip

    Hi Philip,

Encoding H.264 takes about 5x longer than encoding MPEG-2 for Blu-ray, and if using 2-Pass then double that again!

At low data rate settings, H.264 will provide a better quality than MPEG-2, BUT – at higher quality settings that advantage is mostly lost as MPEG-2 can provide a beautiful image at high data rates.

As long as you have room on the disc, you can crank up the data rate and just use MPEG-2 for Blu-ray and you’ll find it looks quite nice. Try a setting of CBR in the 25-30 range. Of course, if you can let the system run overnight then H.264 is an option.
