February 12, 2007 at 3:39 am in reply to: Decklink HD Extreme — how does this sucker work??Thanks, Kristian. I’m on a mac pro.
The card is in the 4th slot, my graphics card is in the first (bottom) slot and I had it set to the first profile (where slot 4 was x8 and slit one was x16).
So you’re saying to change it to the one where slot 4 is x4 instead? Okay, will give it a try now.

Tried running the BlackMagic Disk Speed test but get a message “Hardware not found: Disk Speed Test cannot check disk speed without hardware installed.”
?? Does that mean it’s not seeing the decklink card, or…?

February 9, 2007 at 3:47 pm in reply to: Decklink HD Extreme — how does this sucker work??Thanks Mike:
1. You can’t get the Decklink Card to Work in your mac?
Card installed, is recognized by FCP. Question is, how am I supposed to plug my cam into the card? OBviously there’s no firewire into the card, so do I go BNC out to those sets of cables? Or use the composite cable that came with my A-1 to connect to RGB, and get some sort of RCA/BNC adapter? I’m a bit lost here on simply connecting the camera to the computer (which up until now I’ve just used the Mac firewire outlet).
2. The camera is not sending a signal to the Decklink card?
See #1…
My next question, once I understand how to connect the cam, is what’s a good workflow? Capture/work in DVCPRO HD? And then uprez my SD stuff to go in the project?
Thanks for any help. Am a rank beginner with this decklink card.

I was where you were a month or two ago, have used Premiere for years, and liking PPro 1.5 and 2, not having the crashing problems with it you mentioned, though having some problems here and there. Last month I bought a Mac Pro and 30″ screen, moved nearly all the programs I use on PC over to Mac (mac versions), only have to still move quick books over to complete the move. I have my old computer networked in with the mac, so I can still get anything off it I may want. But there’s no turning back. I’m taking a course at DV Expo right now on Mac level 1, a lot of which I learned from watching a DVD set from Total Training, but I want to be sure there are no holes in my knowledge, so I’m going to go through the full course over the next some months.
Anyway, I’m totally sold on editing in FCP for a numerous reasons. If you’re at a point where you’re considering making the move, ready to buy a new computer, no question in my own mind to head for FCP. There is a learning curve, no doubt about it, and things that you knew how to do easily in PPro (or on your PC) take some figuring out to see how it’s done in mac land. But FCP is a really robust program with a bright future, in my view, and I’m having a lot of fun with it. There are plenty of plug-ins and things you can add on in FCP, if that’s a concern. I’m sold.
Good luck on your decision.

October 8, 2006 at 2:45 am in reply to: When buying Mac Pro — should I get the Extended Protection play? You think I’d be caught DEAD at Denny’s??
I actually *did* run into Spielberg and Katzenberg in a restaurant some years back, at the time Katzenberg was plotting his escape from Disney. The restaurant was actally owed by the two of them, Dive in Century City (which went out of biz — so not everything Spielberg touches turns to gold).
But I’m looking forward to stepping into the Mac light.
One thing I’m finding is that the people who are into Macs really emotional about it. People who buy PCs just try and get a powerful machine. People who are Macheads sing the praises and seem emotionally attached. Maybe soon I’ll discover why that is…

Thanks for all the input. You may start to see me hanging around this board some, soon as my new goodies arrive!

Thanks. Is there any downside to going with 750 gig drives, rather than 500? Does it affect performance negatively? Or is it negligible, and having the extra storage is well worth?
