I agree. I almost always launch FCPX with fcpx library manager from Arctic whiteness, set to only load the selected library and close everything else. Or I use the last key to do the same. There’s nothing more confusing than having unwanted libraries open while editing.

If it were me, I think I’d be thinking bad thunderbolt hardware. Might be worth having a chat to try nearest Apple service people.

You can close all open libraries, so FCPX can exist with no libraries loaded. Hopefully it’s a small step from that to not demanding a default library on the system drive.

Yes, the lens flare title is what it is, although I’m sure there are some third party ones that can do more.
The brilliant thing about FCPX is that most effects can be customised in Motion. Add new parameters as needed, or even make your own lens flare title from scratch. The sky’s the limit 🙂

Create a new library, give it a name and choose the external drive as the place you want it to be created.
Or am I not understanding the question?

That’ll still be a step up from my current mess. Sharing either doesn’t work at all, or it burns up so many CPU cycles, I can barely move the mouse.
I’ve got a clean install down to a couple of hours work, plus the occasional cursing when I go to use something I forgot to put back, so I’ll give 10.11 a week or so, then revert back if I need to. And surely a bug fix FCPX update can’t be too far away?

i think that workaround was from the days of Compressor 4.0 but the current version of Compressor is a step too far away from anything FCP 7 can work with.
Can’t help with an alternative though – it’s been years since I had FCP 7 installed.

I’m feeling adventurous. I need to do clean instal of my Mac Pro (thanks to a bunch of weird OS X and FCPX issues I just can’t resolve) so from what I read here, I figure I may as well jump to El Capitan.

If you have the bandwidth, there’s no reason not to do it but it’ll be five times the bandwidth for maybe a 5% improvement if any. But as you say, sometimes every little bit counts.

I believe you might get marginally better quality from YouTube if you upload ProRes but that’s going to be a huge file vs the h.264 equivalent. I’ve never and a quality issue with Final Cut’s built in YouTube preset.
